In the late 70s the pavement track in San Jose closed after 20+ years. The fairgrounds then opened a dirt track, 1/3 mile, same as the asphalt track was. They ran their pavement cars there the first year and then their rules changed and everyone built dirt cars. At the same time, wings, on the west coast at least, were growing bigger and bigger. No rules for them, at the time. Lots of open Comp. races also in California then. After awhile the rules changed and sprint cars took over as the race car of choice and wings had a limit of 5'x5'. I'm building a replica of Brent Kaedings dirt car from that early era of fairgrounds racing. I was never a fan of the giant wing thing back then but it doesn't look too bad on the model.
