I pulled this kit from my stash on May 5, 2019; the night we got home from the GSL.

1997 reissue of the 1970 Tamiya Lola T-70 Mk III kit. It's been patiently waiting for 22 years in my stash to be built.
I've been researching, planning and figuring all month. (Actually I was scheming a couple days before in case I didn't find a dream deal on another Caterham kit during the show/trip.)
It will be built as a street car T-70 replica with some modern upgrades.

I started by cleaning up the tub and main body panels.
Lots of filling and sanding Lola T-70 Mk III to remove the twenty ¼ inch diameter ejection pin marks in the tub alone and general parting lines. But still a nicely molded kit considering its age.

The insides of the body also needed to be addressed for the same issues.

I should have just machined the velocity stacks as I originally thought I would in the first place years ago when I started this project. I 3D designed and grew different ones thinking I could do better than old fashioned machining, but they just didn't look like what I wanted when I put them on the carbs. I spent well over 50 hours chasing that approach.
So I went back to "the old way". I ground two steel tools and turned these stacks on my lathe using a compound slide for the inside to follow the shape of the outside cut.

The flanges were made "old school" too as separate parts.

Sometimes machining is still the best way for some parts!

I went to install the alternator and noticed I needed to put the rear sway bar in first. That meant I had to make it and the stabilizer links. They are made of steel with fabricated resin Lola T-70 Mk III ends. But to install them I had to set up the rear suspension too. After all that was done and the alternator was installed I made the belt and hooked up the wires. I also added the PCV hoses to the breathers.

I knew the C5R Corvettes (Riley and Scott built) for Lemans had a dif mounted alternator (C5 has a transaxle in the rear as well) and that was the first time I ever heard of doing such a thing. One would think the rpm's of the axle would be lower than that of the engine and therefore, insufficient not to forget that it doesn't supply power when the car is stopped - but then taking into account that when racing the axles are being run at higher speeds and stopping - well, that's only for pit stops and those have to be quick anyway. I never knew the Lola had that. Is that a common practice for mid engined sports racers?

    Apparently it's common for T70s.

The hood assembly is getting close to being done. The headlights and covers have been installed and wired. The winglets are installed too.

A little dust and dirt was added to the underside. The rest of the wiring will be added after the lower light assembly is added.

The cloisonné Lola badge for the hood was made from scratch; a combination of custom decals and a chrome base.

Of course it needs mounting posts…

The mounting bar, nuts and washers were also fabricated.

    Thank you Roger!

Now that the lower lights and the "grille" are installed, the rest of the underhood wiring could be done.

This goes in the "done pile" for now…
The plug for the lights that connects to the receptacle on the firewall is hanging down at the rear of the wheel well.

The door windows are finished and installed. The front sections are fixed so there is a black seal around them. There are no seals for the rear flip out sections. There's also a little handle inside for each of those.

Wow! Your build is looking fantastic! So so so much detail! I cannot imagine how many individual parts you have into your build but I suspect that it could be calculated from your unimaginable hour count!! Beautiful workmanship!!
    Cheers,
