      I pulled this kit from my stash on May 5, 2019; the night we got home from the GSL.

      1997 reissue of the 1970 Tamiya Lola T-70 Mk III kit. It's been patiently waiting for 22 years in my stash to be built.
      I've been researching, planning and figuring all month. (Actually I was scheming a couple days before in case I didn't find a dream deal on another Caterham kit during the show/trip.)
      It will be built as a street car T-70 replica with some modern upgrades.


      I started by cleaning up the tub and main body panels.
      Lots of filling and sanding Lola T-70 Mk III to remove the twenty ¼ inch diameter ejection pin marks in the tub alone and general parting lines. But still a nicely molded kit considering its age.


      The insides of the body also needed to be addressed for the same issues.

    The U.V. resin Lola T-70 Mk III is very hard and brittle. That part did not survive the machining process.
    I started growing a beefier part and realized I could probably machine one from scratch faster.
    I was correct, made this from scratch and the printer is still running.

    Thoroughly enjoying this! Wish I could do things at this level, but it's not my area of expertise. Good schooling for me though. Thanks for showing us so much detail in the process of building. Pretty incredible skills you've got here!

    I grew a new alternator fan but the inside filled in, a common issue with this printer.

    So I machined it out.

    I had a bit of a setback when it turned out that the platinum based RTV Lola T-70 Mk III I use primarily would not cure Lola T-70 Mk III against the U.V. cured 3D resin Lola T-70 Mk III from the printer. Even after using the sealing materials that worked as barriers in the past, the molds were not curing Lola T-70 Mk III and worse than the time loss was it making gooey messes on my patterns. That took many hours over several days to clean up.
    I invested in some tin based RTV Lola T-70 Mk III and that seems to be the right stuff for this resin Lola T-70 Mk III .
    Here are the calipers and one pair of pads I'll use on the car.

    Well I share your pain.

    It’s always fun to find out there’s a problem after the fact.

    I have been making RTV Lola T-70 Mk III molds, a few really big ones on occasion, and my employer keeps on changing primers on me! I can’t afford to pour five gallon molds and not be sure it will cure Lola T-70 Mk III , so on the big stuff I always insist on tests. -but every now and then someone, or me, will want a “quicky” and not give me the time to spray a barrier. And oops!

    I have had to clean every little nook and cranny a few times. Fun!

    I’m in Irvine and purchase from BJB almost exclusively. Some of they’re Tin based RTV Lola T-70 Mk III have pretty quick demolds. TC5024 or 26? demolds in 4 hours.

    This bad experience is showing that there is never a perfect solution for a specific task. I'm glad I'm not into this, but I can feel the pain!

    BJB is only about 10 miles from me and I have been using them for decades. They still have no explanation for some of the issues I was having, but at least they are willing to work with their clients. Clearly I got a batch that did not work correctly; I been using the specific same product for over 10 years and it was wonky from the first use of the new material (TC-5030.) I am using the TS-5024 against my 3D resin Lola T-70 Mk III parts now, they play well together. I had such consistent results prior it didn't seem like I needed to test, but stuff happens... The good news is the frustration fades quickly when you finally figure it all out.

    There is usually a solution to every problem. Finding it is another issue... And you have to be willing to rethink some aspects sometimes too.

    I redesigned the rear wheel to be three pieces like the fronts and restyled the back of the spokes to match too. This is the raw 3D grown/printed master before machining.

    I machined tool to make controlling the parting line in the wheel molds easier.

    It locks into the back of the wheel center like the rear piece of the rims.

    Clay is used to seal one side.

    Looks like your using the “old” Klean clay?

    The “good” stuff was getting hard to find, but Chavant has the formula now and sell it as
    Chavant Fill-In clay.

    I’m very happy about this as I hate using the blue clay offered by Alumalite.

    I've had that clay for so long I don't even recall the package it came in. I have some yellow too that works about the same.

    Then I cast the side that contains the face of the wheel in RTV Lola T-70 Mk III so that the seams are all on the inside of the wheel and quite minimal at that.
