First Super Modified Model

Thanks Rick; It's more like the style we ran in California, San Jose supers. Box tube lower rails and a cage. The body is the hardest part for me even though I have made the real ones back in the day. I love those Edmunds cars but they weren't very popular where I raced. The hood is just a combo of different ones I liked over the years. I've been on this about a month and should finish in Jan. Really have learned a lot about how models are built and I have a long ways to go. This site is what got me interested in doing something like that. That and the fact that Don Edmunds used to build 1/4 scale models of his racers.

A little update photo of the super modified. This model stuff is really a lot of fun. I need to do a few things more like a steering wheel and numbers but am looking forward to building another 1/8 scale car. I'm going to do a 50s Indy roadster and a six wheel Tyrell F1 car from the 70s. This car has a taken about a month and a half to build from scratch including drawing the plans.

Thanks guys, this has been fun. I'm ready for the next one and I will show some shots as I'm building it but I doubt it would be anything that you all haven't done except for the body. Right or wrong, I made it out of poster board and tape and laid up fiberglass and resin over the whole thing while it was attached to the frame. Then pulled it off the frame, after it set, and removed the poster board by running the body under hot water. Finally I added several layers of resin and sanded between each coat until it was the way I wanted it to look. This may not be correct, but it worked and it was easy to do. Use a lot of petroleum jelly on the frame and cardboard to keep the thing from sticking.

I like like the looks of this one, looks more like the San Jose asphalt supers, even though you have the dirt tires on it, still brings back some of the Sargeant Modified looks.
when I was still young enought to chase these around & do vody repairs & fab, I used to cut the shapes out of florist foam then lay up the glass cloth over that, then remove the foame with a generous bath of acetone, then lay up a layer of seperated mat followed by some old fashioned body filler to finesse out the shape & finish.. Keep up the good work. Is that a copy of Op's helmet, or an original?

Thanks horsepower. This super is like the ones that ran in Oklahoma and Kansas back in the 70s. I'm building a San Jose pavement super right now and it's on a thread named "Second Super Modified". Sounds like you've seen more than a few races there, before they went on dirt at the fairgrounds. The helmet is mine; the first full face one I owned. Opp was my hero so that's why the cross and the car I'm building now, is exactly like the first race car, I drove. Welcome to this site. These guys do amazing work, don't they?

First of all, Welcome!! (and) second of all, how "New" is new? Without specifics, where are you located? There may be a model shop in your area? or a model making club? Everyone here is very passionate about model making and we're always happy to help! Some of us are members of several modeling groups/forums, and being spread all across the country. indeed all across the globe! help is just a few clicks away!

Depending on the scale? one could start with some of the components used by the radio control guys. Some people start by modifying die-cast models into something more accurate?

Real race car chassis or model like I do? For the replicas I build I use 1/8 scale. I make the chassis out of styrene tube and rod. I buy all my supplies on line at Hobbylinc. When I first started I used brasa tubing which is good and plenty strong. I just find the stree easier to work and much fast.
