      Fellow modellers,

After a time working in 1 to 1 My SuperGlide project return scale (and you think scale building is frustrating???) I have gotten back into a project that I had started a couple of years ago. I now work 10:30 pm til 7 am during the week. I try to keep the same schedule on weekends. I needed something to do as I seem to be the only person awake at that time. I will try to post pics of where I have restarted the build, which is the point I had left off at.

I would like to give a special shout out to "modelmaniac" who had parted with his kit so I could do this project. Great Guy. Thank you and I hope you see this thread.

I hope to post a few pics of the bike itself. I no longer have any pics of my own but I did get a couple from the girlfriend I had at the time. One thing about the pics, they are glued into a photo book and I only got pics of the pics. There is a cover over them and that is why they may look a bit grainy. Better than nothing. Brings back a lot of memories, it was a really nice bike. I am posting the ones I have so please don't ask to see the other side, I ain't got 'em.

The bike was a 1973 FX SuperGlide. Kick-start only. There are a few differences between this bike and the kit. I will be trying to explain them as I go along and try to explain how/why I do certain things. I will need to cast a few parts and fabricate some.

The bike was not "chromed" out so I stripped most of the plating off. I have about 7 different shades of Silver that I use to try to get the look I want for various parts. I added a wash of thinned black ink to most of the engine/trans, etc as I kept most of the painted surfaces clean but some parts were rather neglected, as you may be able to tell from the pic of the bike in the driveway. I rode the bike a lot. Check the slack in the chain in the same pic.

One thing on the paint, I am thinking that this may be one of my bigger challenges. Using the pics and what memory I have left (hey, it was 1975-1978, I was 20 in '75) I have an idea on how I will do it. I have the kit tank in primer My SuperGlide project return now. I need to add the same basic scheme to the front fender as well.

If you notice, I wrote a tutorial a while back titled "Making 2 identical Parts". For the observer these are the parts that comprised part of the sissy-bar. Please check it out if you haven't yet.

More to come and I am glad to be back!!! I will be adding build pics soon.

A little bit more about the bike. As mentioned it had custom paint and a one off My SuperGlide project return sissy-bar and highway pegs. It also had 4 inch extended forks (they looked great, not too much, but some, and the stock kick-stand was retained). It had six bend pull back handle bars . I have already made the extended tubes (if my math is correct they are a little over 5/8ths of an inch longer than the kit tubes). I made they from aluminum tubing. My SuperGlide project return-fx-build-jpgMy SuperGlide project return-fx-build-1-jpgMy SuperGlide project return-fx-build-jpgMy SuperGlide project return-fx-build-jpgMy SuperGlide project return-fx-build-jpg

The first kit pic shows one stock tube and the two extended ones I made. It also show some of the work I did to the oil tank as that is the way they look. There is a lot of plastic on the top as you can tell by the deep groove in it. It will help keep the oil line down. The 3 next pics show the bike sorta mocked up. I have made the highway pegs and sissy-bar. I have done a lot of work on the oil pump as I want to run the lines as they should be. The carb has had a lot of extra work done as has the tranny. I am a bit anal retentive and I sometimes wonder if simpler might be better? Nonetheless, we will see how I continue. I put the top end oil lines on and the frame has been painted. I just wanted to get some pics up.

Hmmm, I did have a couple pics of the other side. They are not really in focus and yes, that is me "back in the day". I had gotten these pics along with the ones posted, they were just lost on my computer. One thing you may notice, the paint on the tank does not come down from the top as it did on the other side. The second pic is a good shot of the "Look".

As mentioned above, the linkage will move. The linkage is one of the differences between my bike and the kit. The shifter for the kit bike goes thru the primary cover. Mine was like the FL/FLH. Fortunately, the kit had the pieces I needed. It took some work on the round piece that attaches the linkage to the trans as this part was just a pin to be glued. It needed redone so it would swivel.

I am going to have to cast the rear brake caliper/pad as mine used the same unit. The kit has a smaller version. The pics showing the inner primary show where I made a block-off for the electric starter.

As an aside, I am using a Tamiya My SuperGlide project return 1/6 scale FXE 1200 kit. I should have mentioned that sooner, just in case you were wondering.

    Hi Jim,
nice to see that you are back and that you have fixed the little problems with the extra parts that you need for your 1973 custom version of your harley.

Thanks Harleybuilder. I'm not sure all the problems are taken care of but it was nice that the kit had the parts I needed. They must have used the same sprue My SuperGlide project return as the ElectraGlide.

I am putting up some pics of the carb that I have done some work on. The butterfly should not be red, I made it that color to show it better. My plan is to have the choke knob open and close the choke. I also added a piece for the throttle cable to attach to.

The pic reminds me that I need to install the push-rods. My SuperGlide project return-fx-build-x1-jpgMy SuperGlide project return-fx-build-x2-jpgMy SuperGlide project return-fx-build-x3-jpg

Sometimes it' the SMALL things. (If this doesn't prove my AR trait it should add to the notion). I cut the kick-start pedal off, grooved the arm, formed a piece of plastic to adapt so the kick-start lever will swivel in and out.
I have been kind of afraid to do some of this stuff as I have been away from it so long that I figure I'd screw something up. This was one of those parts. It's to the point if mess up-Oh Well, deal with it if it happens. I gotta get this project moving forward. There have been quite a few parts that I have painted and need to paint. I paint outside and the weather has been really crappy for painting.

Thanks for the encouragement guys!! Much appreciated. It ain't gonna build itself. Kinda glad I took some time. I realized I needed to add a part to the tranny. It would have been difficult if it was installed.

I'm building it in sub-assemblies. Once I get all the little parts ready I will put it together. Started on the clutch and front brake parts. For whatever reason the switch units and master cylinder are from a black tree My SuperGlide project return . They are, in reality, aluminum. Need to paint 'em. Here's the rub with that, the way they assemble you need install the levers first (they have pins). I cut the pins off and I'll drill thru the lever and make my own pins. That way I can assemble the other parts and install the levers later. This may be convoluted (even to explain) but I it will be a better system for what I have in mind.

I stripped the chrome from the kick-start and brake/clutch levers. I HAVE to remove the mold parting lines (they bother me on finished models) and I don't know how to do that with-out removing the chrome. The levers are aluminum so paint will work there.

Oh, and Mike. Yes it is my avatar pic. That's why I asked you to keep an eye out for one of these in 1/12th, cheap.

Sorry it's taken so long to put these up. I spent the better part of Saturday/Sunday night/morning cutting the stock mount off the speedo unit. I used the back of my hobby knife My SuperGlide project return and an X-Acto saw (very carefully) to cut them apart. Stock pics are on page one.

I am including a pic I took off feeBay of what the part actually is. I've added plastic sides (the white). The pic of the bottom shows a wire that I will use as the odometer reset cable. It will be black, but of course, I can't find my thin black wire right now.

I will need to make this piece chrome and I'd like to throw out a question: I have been thinking of using Dupli-Color Chrome paint (their Chrome Metallic My SuperGlide project return # CS101). Has anyone used this? I do most of my priming/painting in Dupli-Color lacquer My SuperGlide project return (or fingernail polish) and I would like to use it for the chrome I need to put on this build. One thing I do know about the paint is it takes longer to dry. Anyone know if it's lacquer My SuperGlide project return or enamel My SuperGlide project return ? Do you need to prime first? Any help here would be appreciated. I do know about AllClad, never used it and other than feeBay I wouldn't know where to buy it. Thanks for any info you have.

Maybe someday I will learn to pay attention!!! I will be using the same mount. Still needs glued but it is in the after pics.
