      A new project:

Flying Merkel Board Racer circa 1911

While gathering information about the Ace XP 4 racer with a Merkel front fork

I came across this paper model of a Merkel Borad Racer 1/10 scale:

I converted it into a plastic model:

The wheels are the only kit parts in this case two 21 inch front wheels from a 1/8 scale Revell Flying Merkel Board Racer chopper.
Good for 28 inch wheels in 1/10 scale. The rest is sheet and and rods in various diameters.
They will be replaced by newly spoked wheels and maybe some O-rings for tires.
Somewhere I saw even white O-rings...

      The engine:

Cylinders are made from punched out discs in 6mm and 8mm diameter. The screws are tiny opticianīs screws.

      The carburettor:

Also made of various styrene Flying Merkel Board Racer rods. The fuel bowl is a piece of a 1/72 Flying Merkel Board Racer aircraft tip tank.

      The front:

And the intake manifold that goes between the cylinders:

The pieces are looking rather rough on the photo but consider that the carb has a lenght of about 1,5cm.

Beautiful paint work. This is really coming out extremely well.

Sean mentioned them some time back, I think??? I don't remember him having any problem getting the chain. Maybe it was just and oversight on their part.

If you ever decide to sell the bike I'm calling first dibs.

I tried to contact them after I lost out on one on ebay to no avail. I understand that this is not a completed chain, but a PE kit with a LOT of miniscule parts. After seeing the actual size of a plastic "chain" from an H-D kit, I'm glad that I didn't get it - I'd never be able to complete it.

Google "PSME", Precision Scale Model Engineering or go to www.psmescale.com . They have small scale chain listed in their catalog. My catalog is a few years old so please take that into account. I have also bought rubber cogged drive belts that will work great for blower belts. If you don't see what you want , contact them directly and ask, you might be surprised. They were extremely helpful, informative and fast when shipping purchases. I highly endorse them and their products.

After a long pause I finally decided to carry on with my Flying Merkel:

I put on my self printed decals on one side of the tank. They were printed on white decals sheet with an ink jet printer and sealed with clear laquer. Each letter had to be cut out separatly.

The rear mudguard was made of a glued up Protar Norton Manx rear fender. It was narrowed
for the "bicycle" wheels of the Merkel.

    Some other details:

The exhausts or rather flamethrowers, the spark plugs and the Bosch ignition magneto

Here is a link to a startup of a restored Merkel:

The raw parts foot pedals and cranks together with the sprocket for the primary drive.
I still have no proper chain for the model except some rubber Protar chains. I sent an email to Cosmoīs Factory in Japanto order his photo etched chain and sprockets. He now accepts Paypal but his ordering system does not work.

    Stay tuned

    Some other bits and pieces.

The handlebars now have grips and acorn nuts.

The pressure pump for the oil system. The oil runs from the tank through the engine
    and drips onto the track....

The lever for the ignition adjustment- not for brakes or clutch, these were just left off-
    surplus weight.

The foot pedals are now almost finished. Need some touchup on the paint.

I finally managed to order the chain set from Cosmoīs Factory so the sprockets
have to be swapped for etched ones which are also on the way from Japan to Germany.

    The ignition lever in place.

    More to come

    Some more details:

The letter had to be cut out individually from white decal Flying Merkel Board Racer paper.

The rear mudguard. I forgot about that. Unfortunatly my Tamiya Flying Merkel Board Racer enamel Flying Merkel Board Racer paint X6 orange
has dried up. It is no more available in Germany. I hope the acrylic Flying Merkel Board Racer paint has the same tone.

The tank now has some caps. The front cap is for fuel, the rear one is for oil.
I also added the mounting points for the upper frame rail.

And finally the headbadge of the Flying Merkel. A small decal Flying Merkel Board Racer made with Photoshop.

Thanks to all who voted for my model!
    I really feel honoured.
The model is yet unfinished. I failed to assemble the
photoetched Flying Merkel Board Racer chain.
I will try this later when I have the nerves for it.

    Greetings
