Anybody Building A Boat

I’m working on a 1/16 shovelnose hydro, at around 25in., that’s as big as I wanted to go so I could still display it. It will be scratchbuilt out of balsa and insulation, but I may laminate on some 1/32 plywood to the top deck for a natural wood deck if it looks good. I’m still cutting parts out so nothing to show yet. I’m going to build it with a full cowl over the engine and so it can be displayed until I finally get around to scratchbuilding an engine. I’ll have to print out my own decals on my printer. I’ll post some pictures when I get a little farther, unfortunately I just haven’t had much time to model lately.

Funny you should ask!

Actually, I've just started my very first ever wooden model. It's a 1/24 scale Chesapeake Bay "Skipjack" oyster boat.

Since this is the first time I've ever built a wood kit, my results might be, um....less than spectacular. But I'll post a few photos and let you guys see what I'm up to. In any case it's a real nice change of pace from plastic (and Pocher!).

Sounds interesting Harry. I don't need another project right now but I'm still thinking about building an 8th scale Dumas Chris Craft and putting a built flathead in it. It would also be fun to find a "Crackerbox" style racer or small hydro and build it around one of Tim's Offy's.

You're in for some fun Harry...I've built a couple of tall ships so a couple of years back I figured a wood fishing trawler would be a nice, easy, relaxing build, wound up spending way more time than I had intended to. Wood is down right addictive. You do one and sooner or later you'll have to do another.

Ahoy there, mateys...

Here's my VERY FIRST EVER attempt at building a wooden model. It's a 1/24 scale model, will be approx. 20 inches long when done (ok, it's not "large scale", technically, but whatever... )

Since I've never built a wooden ship (or wooden ANYTHING, for that matter), this will be a "learn how as you screw it up" adventure (misadventure?)!

I haven't gotten very far yet, but here's where it's at right now. So far all the parts fit very well, only minimal sanding of the "sprue joints" (the wooden parts are laser cut on wooden sheet "parts trees"). Next step is to install the hull and rudder, then paint the hull and rudder white on top, red below the water line, then on to the sails and rigging (oh boy!!!)

Looking good Harry. You have a handle on it, start looking for a bulk head-double planked kit that suits your fancy. All those little brass nails and hand shaping planks will make you feel all warm and fuzzy, honest. :}}.;'

I dunno...individual planks on the hull sounds [B][I]way[/I][/B] too much like individual spoked wheels.

I thought this hobby was supposed to be fun...not torture!!!

I guess it depends on whether you are a sadist or a masochist......
