I know this is not large scale, but it is a large model. I hope it's OK to post this here. With the anniversary of Apollo 11 and Man stepping on the moon, I decided to build this model for about the 4th time in my life. Each time they get better and better. Well, I finished her up yesterday less a coat of mat or dull finish. This is a good thing. Something just didn't look right after the decals were applied. I looked at the box and realized the USA and UNITED STATES decals were printed in black.....Not Red....***...Revel supplied decals in black and not red.....Why would they do this? After searching the Internet and finding out I was right in assuming the decals should have been red, I ordered a set from Space Model Systems.

Space Model Systems Home Page

Then I ordered the LUT and crawler from David Maier

Edu-Craft Diversions - Hands On To History

The crawler and LUT should be very challenging to build. I've never done anything in cardboard.

When it's all complete, it should look pretty good sitting in my Den.

Cheers

Looks amazing. I once built the rocket (long gone now...) so the complete package must look pretty impressive.

Funny fact is that I do recall building al that stuff (Apollo, Challenger, etc) but I do not recall throwing it away. It still is gone...

Can't believe that was punched out of cardboard sheet and the thin pieces look so solid. You are such a careful builder with the material at hand that your work always looks like the real thing no matter what medium.

I remember the Apollo moonshots USA

Isn't the crawler the largest land vehicle ever built? Your model is impressive, hard to believe it's cardboard. Keep going!

I saw the crawler on the History Channel. That thing is huge.

It's been a few months since I worked on this, so lets get back to work.

I started adding the diagonal braces. Over 220 strips rolled onto a brass tube then removed, cut to length, touched up with a red sharpie and applied to the LUT.

Pictures 1 is a portion of the braces before cutting out
Picture 2 is one brace ready to roll and glue
Picture 3 is a portion of the tubes ready to trim to length and install
Picture 4 is what I have done so far.

Cheers

I'm trying to build one swing arm per day.

Swing arms 1 thru 4 are complete. Lots of cutting with a razor blade.

Boy - if you can't go to Florida, this is the next best thing. Good job and I still can't believe it is cardboard.

Here's my completed LUT with Saturn V, Apollo 13, just in time for the 40th anniversary. April 11th she lifted off. I was actually there and saw her take off. We were on our way back home to Michigan when the problems started.

Cheers
