My wife and I went to Lowe's today to pick up a can of paint. All of a sudden, I was struck with an idea for natural metal finishes on large scale aircraft of 1/24 scale and up. I haven't tried it on smaller models yet but the technique seems to work very well on my 1/18 scale P51D from 21st Century Toys. The solution is HVAC foil tape, the kind you can get for wrapping air ducts at Lowe's or Home Depot. I bought a whole roll for $7.72 and I think it may do the entire aircraft and maybe more. It's a lot cheaper and sticks alot better than BMF and a lot easier to handle. Plus, it's sandable and polishable so you can get different shades of aluminum by sanding the panels in different directions. It's very easy to scribe and looks pretty realistic when you put two pieces edge to edge. You can even use a small rounded point instrument to make rivets that also look pretty good. After I get the fusilage prepared, I'll do a tutorial on it so you can see how it works.

Cool! I had the role of something like that but it was a little too heavy for 1/32 so I put it away. Looking forward to your tutorial.

Thanks sling. I also think it might be a little too thick for 1/32. For that I would use regular BMF. The HVAC stuff would be extremely useful when I decide to make some 1/8 scale fighters. That's way in the future though. I'm still going to superdetail that 1/18 scale P40 ion AVG colors. I just don't know whose bird I'll make.

I just got this book, can’t believe I waited this long, it’s definitely worth it. Some excellent pictures and some of the best profiles I have seen.

BMF can be pretty expensive when you start to look at covering something like a 1/48 Fortress, in that case you can use a regular kitchen foil and some foil adhesive. I also picked up some gold leaf adhesive (at least I think that's what it was) at Michael’s, but I haven’t had a chance to try it yet. Here’s a link on using kitchen foil.

Thanks again, Sling. Those reference sites are dead on perfect for me. I've got some genuine AVG memorabilia and I want to pick a bird that was flown by that particular pilot. I have to go back and figure out who owned what. I have some brass AVG shoulder insignia that belonged to Pete Atkinson and a set of bullion Chinese wings that I think was owned by Parker Dupouy. The rest is still a mystery. I ought to photograph the stuff and let you see what it looks like.

Wow! I’d love to have some pictures of the Tiger stuff for my site. If there is anything like that you have questions on, you could try posting pictures on my P-40 message board to see if anyone knows. I had just put my new board up so I hope all the guys that were visiting the old one are still looking in.

I'll definitely do that. I'll dig out the stuff and I'll display what I have. I think you'll like it.
