so, while i'm waiting for both parts for my 1:1 1-8 scale sonny's hemi (sccratch built of course) '37 and my 1-8 '69 camaro pro mod. i got the hankerin' to build another engine. the sonny leonard hemi headed big block is just an incredible motor so i had to take a stab at it.

this one will have a new century aluminum cross bolted chevy block with some of those monster sonny's hemi heads on it. not sure what will occur for an induction system as of yet. so,..... we'll play it by ear.

i started with the valve covers just cause they're what make this thing so identifiable.

here they are next to the 5.3 bore space wedge headed motor i built for the pro mod.

next i built the new century block. this block combines a big block chevy with the cross bolted bottom end of a chrysler hemi.

at the same time i'm working on the cam belt drive.

hopefully i'll get some free time soon to do some more.

    hope you enjoy!

glad to hear you're all moved in and settled down, mike. life always seems to have a way of getting in between time and modelling. hehe.

so, i took the block as far as i'm going to. here's the finished version.

next i finished up the jesel style belt drive, dist belt drive and the balancer.

    test fit.

    hope you enjoy!

Is the block aluminum too? If so, HOW did you ever machine that????

the block is a combination of resin 1-8 scale sonny's hemi (sccratch built of course) , renshape and styrene 1-8 scale sonny's hemi (sccratch built of course) . it would be possible to machine it from a solid block of aluminum but, i'm not ready to invest that much time into a cylinder block. thanks, for thinking it was though!

It would not have surprised me had you said it was aluminum :)

What about the ridges in the valve covers? Did you use a small end mill (Flat or round?) or a slitting saw to cut them?

I need to do something similar sometime and I'm not sure what is the best tool to use.

I figured it was the ball end mill that you used. The covers look excellent! (As does the rest of the motor!)
    Thanks

    David-

You have achieved such a high level of detail on your engines...the logical next step: Sand 1-8 scale sonny's hemi (sccratch built of course) cast the block and machine it just like Detroit! C'mon! You can do it!

    Excellent and impressive work!

doug, that's a pretty good idea. i might have to start the wheels turning on that one.

hehe, mike. next thing you know you'll want it to run too.

Making an operating 1/8 scale would be cool but I would imagine the it would be difficult to build...i just like the look of engines all types and makes..mechanical stuff has always interested me..
