Hi all, Ive got no space for a steering arm on the frame of my current project so im going to have it on the cowl, how was this done on 1/1 cowl mounted pitman arm rods?, was there just some brackets supporting the steering box?

Mike, if you were to mount the steering box under the dash of a 1:1 cowl mounted pitman arm it would require some substantial bracing. I've seen them mounted on tubing bent like a small roll bar mounted to the frame under the cowl and on heavy brackets welded or bolted to a beefed up fire wall. I like the tubing as it makes for a cleaner look.

Also check jalopyjournal.com you can search for "cowl steering" and there are several entries by different people showing what they did. They have a tech archive and HAMB (message board) with all kind os stuff like that. Be careful though, it is quite addictive.

Check out 3WLARRY's '32...it's almost too nice. Check out this thread where he's showin' off his new steering box setup, but search the other threads he's started as well. The car is just...just...so...dang nice!

Yep. Make sure when you enter, someone knows you are there. It's too easy to get sucked in and just be there for days on end.

Wow, for the equivalent in Aussy dollars I have three quarters of a car built. Just goes to show, a fool and his money.
Donít get me wrong, nice work but 6 grand?? No way! With a little time you can di it all yourself a LOT cheaper.

Hey Doc, I agree. Six grand is wayyy over the top for a steering setup. My mind would tell me to take that 6k and go buy a milling machine. lol

I won't hold it against him though. I think the end results are worth sacrificing the ability to say "I did that" in this case.

Hopefully you guys found this thread and saw the finished beast.

Here's a shot of what Royce Glader did with his '29 Ford Pickup Roadster.
