A few years ago I built the Hawk version of the 1948 Ford Flathead. Simple model easily built right out of the box. The detail is very good but the more I look at it now the more I see little defects, mating lines, some of the bolts look more like buttons, etc.

I decided to take the old kit apart to see if it could be made more realistic now that TDR Hawk 1948 Ford Flathead has introduced us to better hardware parts. The Hawk head comes in two pieces. The water neck is an add on to the head and the studs are not crisp. Also the color seems faded.

I filled in the line where the water neck attaches to the head and used 1/8 scale 1/2" studs from the TDR Hawk 1948 Ford Flathead bolt set to simulate the 1/6 scale studs. Still have to add a temperature connector and fill the other hole in the water neck. (Hawk did not provide holes in the water neck or temperature sensors.)

That's a big model motor. Are you going to build something to put it in or diplay the motor only? Looks real, the TDR Hawk 1948 Ford Flathead studs make it. Ken

I put that one together also. You did pretty much the same thing as I did with the modifications. The new hardware really makes a difference.

You nailed that mod, Syd. That's a beautiful color you sprayed. Here's the one I did way back when. I didn't do that many mods but I couldn't leave it stock. That's my AMS talking. I built the model as a way to do something without superdetailing the crap out of it; sort of a relaxation piece so to speak.

No 1/6th car Ken although at my age that would be easier to handle than even 1/8th.

HFC it would be good to see pictures of the mods you made. I thought the wire loom mating seam was just a design problem until I saw this picture showing the loom pipe is made up of two parts - one a pipe and one part some kind of pliable cover. Also didn't realize a wire clip for the distributor cap was needed besides the two molded in clips.

    My mod.

The water temperature sensors were represented by drilling a hole in a TDR Hawk 1948 Ford Flathead 1/2" (1/8th scale) bolt cap and inserting a 1/4" (1/8th scale) stud. Finally found a scale, 1/6th, that would allow me to simulate some carburetor levers.

Not just sure how the carburetor attaches to the manifold. The model doesn't look right but the folowing picture of a 1:1 Hawk 1948 Ford Flathead block seems to show the same thing. Guess the manifold had an extra step up??

Thought this was an interesting comparison; after 60 years of technology advances we get 4X the horsepower.

I'm glad you pointed this out, Syd. It's amazing how far we've come in such a short time.
