Ok, I am starting an new thread on the Quad Al project , on the recommendation of Don, since I really messed up the last one when it came to picture posting.

I am not particularly gifted when it comes to model building, I have not built a model car since I was about 13 years old, when my cousin demolished a 1926 Mack truck that took me about 2 months to build. I had it finished for less than a week when she got a hold of it. I swore then I would never build another………now fast forward 32 years……… maybe it is time to get back into model building.

Anyway, I am going to use this post to show the WIP Quad Al of the Quad Al. I know I am going to need a lot of help along the way so don’t be afraid to kick me in the head and let me know there is a better/easier way of doing things. I always kind of "brute force" my way through things......and that aint always the best way

So Don, feel free to delete the old post “Quad-Al WIP Quad Al

Well here are some pics of what I am shooting for. I am not planning to do an exact duplicate of the original. I want to refine it a little.

One thing I want to do is refine the driver area a little. I want to adopt a configuration that is more similar to that of the old slingshot dragsters. I want to use bent round tubing instead of the mitered square tubing that is shown in the picture. So if anyone has any good closeup pics of driver seat area of an old slingshot dragster I sure could use them, either model or real it does not matter.

Another thing I am going to change is the offset you see between the front engine pairs and the back engine pairs. The original builder did this because this would allow the throttle linkages to lineup between the opposing engines...... ....... there aint no way I would drive a 4 wheel drive, 8000 horsepower, dragster that has the center of gravity set over and not on the centerline.......just to make the throttle linkages lineup. I think I could find a better way and that is how I will build the model.

The other thing I am changing is how the output of the two engines is combined and fed to the differentials. I am going to bring them together imediately and then take the output through 1 transmission. I will have to see how it is going to work with the body though.

Here is the current status of my computer modeling work. I will use these computer models as a test fit up and as input to machine out the individual parts.

I hope to get the 2-into-1 drive unit and the carb/blower adapter machined out this weekend. I also have the starter/fuelpump components machined and I plan on putting them in rubber this weekend too.

Here are the actual parts I have cast in resin Quad Al and am in the process of finishing them out.

And here is the next piece I need to finish my computer modeling on. I will probably scale it up some. It kind of looks a little small behind all those cylinders when I draw it up acutal size.

This is going to be a fascinating build Tim, I'm looking forward to following it. Now that I'm seeing some of your machining and casting Quad Al work, we may have to get back to our previous discussion.

Tim, any help you need in building this model, just ask away. There are more than enough folks to give you that help. I think this is going to come out beautifully.

My hat's off to you Tim.....all of the above changes sound great and make a lot of sense. I won't worry too much about making an exact replica.....as far as I'm concerned it's your build and the concept of the original is what you are using to build your version.....make it yours and be creative........Maybe you should change the name to Tim's Big Al.

    Thanks

These things might be pretty big for a 1/16 scale car. They measure 2.75 in in diameter .94 inches in width and have a 1.7 in diameter rim in them. They are basicly 1/12th tractor trailer tires. But if they will fit your needs let me know we can work something out.

Ok, I have a little update to post.

Got the Mark Williams inspired differentials cast, assembled, and am in the process of dressing them out

I got the starter/fuelpump master plate dressed out and ready for rubber. That is the one painted black. I painted this one to try and fill in some of the tooling marks.

And I just took the allison motor connector off of the mill. This piece took 11 hours to machine out. I tried some new machining techniques on this one and I am really pleased with the surface finish. I am so pleased with this one I am not even going to paint it. I think the tooling marks are inconseqential (sp?)

I still hope to get the starter/fuelpump and motor connector in rubber tonight.

A few small tooling marks just add realism to it....you'd find them on fullsize machined parts.

    Here is another update

I got the engine connector layed up in rubber and pulled out the two sets I will need for the Quad Al

I also got the starter and fuelpump molded and cast. Having a little trouble with the thin ribs on the starter I will have to recast a couple later this week.

And I also got the cylinder/head assemblies finished out and painted. I decided to just go with the grey for the main bulk of the engine.
