Here's what I have so far on the Lincoln V12. The block basics have been assembled and I'm working on the left cylinder bank. I did a lot of experimenting here and fortunately, it came out fairly decent. I made one of the valves using my drill press for a lathe. It wasn't easy to file a 1/4 inch rod down to 1/16 inch but it's possible. When you try it, just don't put too much pressure on the plastic or it will break off before you're done. The holes for the cyliders and the valves were also made with the drill press. The drill press is not a very expensive item and doesn't have to be large. If you can find one on sale at Lowe's or Home Depot, you can probably get a whole unit for under $150 bucks. I also use a scroll saw I got at Sears and a 4" belt sander form Lowe's. They too were not expensive at all. I think I got them both for under $300 Sesterces at two different times. They're indispensible to me. You don't really need them if you're building kits, but if you're cutting a lot of plastic scratchbuilding engines, frames and other parts, it saves you a lot of time and effort not having to use exclusively a razor saw and files.

Thanks Don. Do you have any pics left over from the v12 you did? If you want, post them right here and I'll look to see how you did your mods.

The 1/8th V-12 got set aside to work on other projects and there were a couple of set-backs...I'll revive it as soon as I can find the time...and yes I'll pull out some of the old pics and post 'em here. It's a hot 39 Lincoln 2 rod version though. During my research the biggest bag of snakes to scratch build 39 Lincoln 2 appeared to be the ignition system.

I could never do something like this...I don't have the patience! It's really an incredibly ambitious project.

Harry, you've got an abundance of skill to undertake one of these. If you can put together one of those Pocher kits, you can do this. Having the patience is another story. I'll get this thing done but probably not without a few naughty words being thrown around the house. It can sometimes take a few hours just to get one small part correct but that's because of my lack of experience.

Today I had a good experience. Down in southeastern Louisville, I found a company that makes plastic. They have all different sizes and shapes. I wound up getting a few scraps for free to try them out. They don't usually have polystyrene 39 Lincoln 2 but they have some other plastics that will solve a lot of problems where styrene 39 Lincoln 2 isn't the best material. We've talked before about making the frame out of metal to handle the weight of a large scale car but I think I have a solution for that. I found a plastic sheeting that is extremely rigid and looks like it can hold up under a lot of weight without bending. I also found plastic blocks and sheets that go up to 3-4 inches thick and rods that I can use to turn wheels. I may even be able to turn a tire master, possibly even a slick. I'll be experimenting tonight.

Oh man, that engine detail is really far out!!

I have been trying to figure out some way to scratch build 39 Lincoln 2 a treaded tire for quite awhile as there are a couple older race cars I would like to do some day. Here’s one thing I thought of that I was going to try if/when I got that far.

Find a R/C with tread as close to a prototype tire as possible.

Make a tire out of whatever material leaving the diameter small enough to make up for the tread to be added.

Lay out some Sculpey and roll the tire through it to get the tread pattern, or just wrap the tread with Sculpey and then roll it out flat and bake it.

Then use a two part epoxy 39 Lincoln 2 putty 39 Lincoln 2 (Milliput has a working time up to four hours) and press that on to the Sculpey tread, then roll the tire over that which hopefully will give you the tread. Then it can be trimmed and possibly even worked a little to make the trend look kind of worn.

    Hopefully that made sense.

That's a pretty good idea, Slingshot. I have some material that may work the same way. It's worth some experimentation.

Here's a few pics of the 1/8th Hot 39 Lincoln 2 Rod Lincoln version, block is still in the rough stage, Dan did the resin 39 Lincoln 2 prototype for the heads, still need to add the water neck to the front of the head, drill holes for the slugs in the block and add details. It won't have all the internals that Jeff's has but it'll have plenty of detail for a resin 39 Lincoln 2 casting 39 Lincoln 2 . I'll post a pic of a finished full size engine this weekend to show you where I'm headed with it. It's going to take a while before I get back to this as I have a couple of masters for bodies to finish first. Jeff asked if I would post it anyway so here it is.

That's a beauty, Don. I found that pic also and it's a good one. One thing I learned about this monster was that it was greatly underpowered because it had a 2 barrel carb that was supposed to handle the load this engine needed. When you put a few more carbs in to get this thing fed, you solve some of that problem. My Lincoln is going to be mostly stock but I will do some mods to make this thing more unique. The "history" this individual car will follow goes like this. Of course, this story is fictitious, but it gives me a little more artistic license to make this car a real "knock out".

This particular car was bought by a rich guy back in 1939. He knew about some of the problems this engine had like the single carb, the overheating problem and whatever else the guy could tell the Lincoln factory. Since he waved a lot of cash in front of the Lincoln guys, they agreed to make him a car to his specs. The manifold now will have 3 carbs, the car will have a better cooling system,a nicer interior and trunk treatment, a paint color not usually put on Lincolns, better wheels and whatever else this guy put on his list( Whatever I can think of that needs a little help) . This car will not be a racer or be considered a custom in the lead sled sense. It will just be a "stock" Zephyr with a few of it's problems corrected to make this a higher quality car.
