For you guys that want to do in progress threads for your contest build entries just start a thread in the appropriate section of the forum, make sure to mention in the title that it's a contest build.

I'll be building a 1/6th scale (barley street legal) Willys drag coupe for the 1st Annual SMC "Strut Your Stuff" Contest. It will be a blower car with two four barrels.

Along with it will be a 1/6th Willys short bed pick-up tow vehicle.
Chances are it will be powered by either a big block bow tie or a scratch built 1/6th Scale Willys SMC Contest Build....... 292 "Jimmy", maybe a 300 inch in-line Ford six. It will depend on how much progress I make before the deadline as I have other projects that have to be finished.

    Whatcha mean...wish you could?
Every scratch builder out there had to start somewhere bud. If you don't want to have to kick out a bunch of cash just grab some heavy card stock and google some info and pics.
The 440 is not a complicated engine and if you make it a part at time practicing on the card stock first you will have a pattern that you can use to cut the parts from plastic and add the final details to.

Start with the block...it just that........ a block. If you deal with basic shapes to start with and add to it you just might find that the only thing stopping you from building what you want is you.

If you mess up the only thing you've lost is some paper, glue and tape, that's cheap enough right?

I have the assembly instuctions for a 1/12th 383/440 lindberg engine here...if you'll attempt to scratch build 1/6th Scale Willys SMC Contest Build....... one and post pics on the forum I'd be willing to E you copies of them to work from.

Just a couple of photos to show where I'm at.......
The blue Willys is being cut up for the pick-up, have to change the door openings as the are not as rounded as they are on the coupe. The hole in the hood has been filled also.

The little white car in the pics is a 1/25th Cuda body for size comparison and the Hemi is the 1/6th monster that will go in the red coupe.

    Mostly, I use .010, .020 & .040 sheet styrene 1/6th Scale Willys SMC Contest Build....... & occasionally .060.
Here's a no cost tip...........I also use old unwanted plastic screen printed plastic display and political signs etc. There is a local screen printing shop in my area that gives me their misprinted signs, over runs and cut-offs at no charge...all I have to do is go pick 'em up ocassionally.

That's what it takes sometimes buddy....more than once (when I was in the military) I had to give a troop a little "encouragement" out the door for their first jump.

After that...they couldn't wait to pack their chutes and go back up and again.
You may just surprise yourself, scratch building isn't something you're born with...you have to learn it and there are plenty of folks here a SMC that will help you take that first step.

BTW...PM me your name and E addy so that can send you copies of these Lindy assembly instructions.

I definitely agree with Don about scratchbuilding. In fact, Don gave me the same speech he gave you when I told him I couldn't scratchbuild either. He showed me differently. Now I've scratchbuilt engines, working suspensions, dashboards, grills, upholstered seats, etc. for cars. For aircraft, I've scratchbuilt all kinds of parts I was even working on completely scratchbuilding a 50 Olds sedanette and a 1/6 scale 39 Lincoln but life got in the way of those. If you need help with scracthbuilding, all ya gotta do is ask. :)'
