Hi Everyone. For those of you who don't me I'm Steve, aka EstebanLoco.
I'm scheduled to have major knee surgery next week and after that I'm going to be on home-detention for a few weeks so I wanted a stress-free build to fill my idle time. The AMT
1:12 version of the 1937 Cord 812 SC came to mind. I had this kit growing up but never finished it. I started another one as an adult but my interests quickly advanced to 1:8 scale and all its glory so unfortunately another unfinished Cord.
The car itself is a classic. Clearly ahead of its time, with innovations (or rarely seen at that time) features like a supercharged Lycoming V8 engine, front-wheel drive, hidden headlights, independent front suspension, variable speed windshield wipers and suicide doors with hidden hinges. Not bad for 1937.
The model kit was also ahead of its time. I remember reading an article in Rod & Custom (I think it was one of those R & C 'Visits' articles) where they visited AMT
and interviewed one of the design engineers and he cited the 1:12 Cord as his department's greatest accomplishment. Besides greater detail, the larger scale allowed them to add features like opening doors, operable (roll-up) windows, posable steering, etc.
While I do enjoy a good classic, I always wanted to see this car as a custom or hot
rod. Maybe smooth out the body, remove cowl vents, fuel filler door, shave door & trunk handles, chop and re-tool the windshield (kit version is big & clunky), make a removable chopped Carson-style top, add larger tires and custom deep-dish chrome wheels, strip the interior and start from scratch, and more...
So I was wondering if anyone has built the Cord and what your thoughts or suggestions are.
Thanks,
Steve
