A while back I saw a thread where someone was asking about a Moon gas tank. As a challenge, I thought I'd see how easy it would be to make one. I made this one in about 4 hours yesterday, from design to finish. After researching on the Moon website, I drew the pattern on the computer and then printed it out on label paper. I stuck the labels to some .080 sheet and then cut out the pieces with a nibbler. I made the tank portion from 22 individual .080 discs that were laminated together. The discs were scribed into .080 sheet using a compass. Then it was easy to cut them out using some heavy duty scissors. If you have some PVC pipe in the correct diameter, you could save a lot of time here. The end caps are dog dish hubcaps from the parts box. The gas cap is a knock-off hub cap from the Lindberg T kit.
Decal
is from the parts box. Hardware is
0-80
drilled out with a 1/16" bit and slid over 1/16" aluminum tube. I really needed to spend more time
sanding
, but I wanted to get it done. You can see the lines where the discs are joined.
One of my long term goals is to make a Mooneyes inspired dragster from the Exterminator kit (with front-mounted supercharger). This tank would look nice in that.
