Ivan Collins was very much a pioneer in making models, very accurate wooden models of horse-drawn vehicles, and doing it as he found those vehicles laying discarded, and wasting away in the country-side.

The above photograph is of Mr. Collins in the field, drawing up his documentation, when and where he found it!

He worked on his collection of models for more than 30 years. Amassing over sixty models, and producing as many sets of plans. -As a teen he had actual experience working with teams of horses, and was very familiar with the wagons of the Oregon area, the northwest woodlands of North America. He also realized that as we were turning to the internal combustion engine, and away from the horse and ox, we were also loosing a way of life, and industries that had been centuries old. So he decided to make models, and to make them as accurate as possible.

-as of posting, I have not received my copy of this book, but I am hopeful! On the cover and in the upper right side is what I believe to be "The Lincoln Carriage" -something I have wanted to model for a long time. -we'll see!

I have finally recieved my copy of Mr. Collin's book, actually it is a book about Mr. Collins, and a copy of LIFE, magazine, which also features an article on him written in 1945. -From the start I had assumed that he had lived and worked in Oregon, but I have just now read that at least during the Second World War, he worked for Lockheed, in Glendale, as a foreman. And that he had already made from scratch 32 wagons, coaches, and carriages by that time.

I am at my day-job, when I get home I'll post some pictures of his work.

By the way, for anybody interested in modeling horse-drawn vehicles, this is a must read book!

It is hard to do justice to another person's work, especially someone we do not really know. I am just so very impressed with this man's output, and his dedication, to his craft.

I hope that everyone who is interested in horse drawn vehicles will pick up this book, I do not think it would disappoint any one.

I'll show just a few of the pictures that I have,

These are from the article in LIFE magazine, April 1945.

Two and a half pages, twelve different models shown as well as a view of the man at work.

Every detail, and actual technique is faithfully repeated on the small. The models are almost completely made of wood. Some metal, usually brass, and one very effective use of plastic.
