What are your modelling plans for 2008?

For me, my biggest goal is to cut back on the number of projects on the bench so that I can actually finish a model. I also want to take what I've learned from my fellow modellers and put it to use on my own projects, including trying some scratchbuilding. Finally, I want to share more of my work on site.

Finish my 32 first. Then work on a 1/25 chopped merc I've had for awhile. After that, either a BIG T, or my wife wants me to build her a 1/12 57 Chevy.. Who knows, I'm starting Grad school in January, I may not get any of it done!

Congrats on grad school Dan. What are you studying?

The first part of my plan for 2008 is to finish my 1/6 scale Lincoln. It will get me to my goal of being able to build free of the kit. With the encouragement I've been receiving from this great membership, I think I'll be able to reach that goal with few hassles. The only problem i may have is this may be the same plan i'll have for 2009. I have no idea how long it will take me to finish this thing.

The second part of my plan is to have as much fun as I can on this site and create as much chaos as I can. I haven't been in the corner for a while now and I'm getting nostalgic for it. I look forward towards helping make this site better and keep it the best of its kind on the net.

HFC: I'll be starting a Masters of Divinity at Southwestern Seminary. My wife and I want to be Collegiate ministers, hopefully at Arizona State (alma Mater) or the Univ. Of Oklahoma (wife's alma mater). Both of us were involved in a college minstry when we were students, and it had such an impact on our lives, that's what we want to do.

My main build for 2008 will be the deuce woodie, as it involves some scratch building which is something that I've wanted to do for a while now. In the meantime I'm going to stock up on my supplies of paint, styrene , glue etc.

Also I want to start building my T as I have visualized it for a bit now.

    That sounds great. Good luck.

    Great thread!

Good luck in grad school, that’s a great calling! I have two uncles and a cousin that are pastors.

I also want to cut down on the number of projects in the new year, but unfortunately that seems to be one resolution I have never kept!

I do want to finish my Lindbergh T this year, still working on scratchbuilding the frame and I’ve just finished some testing on ways to cover the insulation to give it a nice hard smooth shell.

I have always loved the Can Am cars, especially the ones from the sixties and very early seventies, while doing the testing on the insulation I came up with an idea to work on them so I’ve started yet another project, at least I started it before the first of the year! I don’t have much detailed information on the cars and the more detailed I make a model the longer it seems to finish, if I ever even get to that point! For these Can Am cars I am going definitely low tech and they will be pretty much curbside models with an interior. The bodies will be carved out of insulation and then covered, the axles will just be plastic rod through the installation, if any suspension can be seen through the rear end, I will just put in what can be seen. I have a number of sheets of insulation cut and glued together with weights on them and I’ll start cutting and carving by this weekend. My first one will be the Chaparral 2J, the sucker car.

We'll be moving in April to a 10-acre wooded ranch about 3 miles from where we live now. We'll miss living on the water but there are a few advantages to being an inlander.

I'll be concentraing on painting the loboy in January and February. That is a long process that begins with primer coats and wet sanding and then color coats and more wet sanding every week for a 3-week period followed by wax on, wax off. The Alclad process will also be handled concurrently with the other paint. I hope to begin final assembly in April and be done by around mid-May - just in time for some good outdoor pictures.

Once I am in my new shop I hope to apply some of the things I have learned on this site as well as things I have learned myself. Most importantly, that includes becoming more organized. We all kmow that things go so much better when you have a plan and you work in a well organized and clean environment.

As far as new builds for 2008, I want to see what happens with Don's surf woodie project and perhaps use that knowledge to build a woodie or the bakery truck. This wll be a show car with big engine, tires and lots of chrome and other plush details.

Of course, there will also be a deuce in there, most likely a lowered and full-fendered car. If not full-fendered I want to see about cycle fenders. I also want to build a T that I have been visualizing for some time, either kit will do.

While it appears that I am currently building a "tutorial" kit, that actually is not the case. I just tend to share anything and everything, especially if I feel it will help someone else. Having said that, I'd like to do an actual tutorial build, start-to-finish, step-by-step, someday. That could possible happen in 2008 also.

These next few items may or may not get started in 2008, but they are strong possibilities. I want to continue experimenting with different engine setups. I have the auto trans from the Trans Am kit separated and cleaned up and I think I can mate it to the Pontiac engine with no problem. I also have many other good parts from the Trans Am like the fan blade, fuel pump, etc. to use on the Pontiac engine. I also have both transmission options from the Big T separated and cleaned up so they will probably be used on some kit, someday. I also want to try a supercharged engine at some point.

I want to continue to refine the things I have learned like hidden hinges and frame splicing (Z-ing) and gauge construction. I also want to experiment with different plywood materials for my wood dashes. Obviously, if I do a woodie it will use all real wood.

Oh yeah, I want to do one of Dan's 3-window coupes when they become available as I have a vision of that car in my mind also.

As far as finishing the cars I currently have on the shelf - well, we'll see.

    Wow, seems like a lot.

Sounds like a fantastic plan, Steve. I hope your new workshop turns out great. Also, don't forget that any time you put your step by step builds onto the site, it's automatically a tutorial. There's so much to learn from each step. Scratchbuilding may be difficult, but I believe that what you do is more difficult and that is kit modifications. With scratch building, you start with nothing and end up with something. You measure, cut stock and then put it together. It's built up. With kit modification, you start with something you don't want, do some considerable problem solving tearing the part down and then wind up with something you want. In other words, you first have to undo what someone else did, then figure out how to get it the way you want and then wind up with a masterpiece. That's the best in modeling.
