They were experimental headlights for Italian tanks, lit up when the tank was shifted into reverse to reduce collisions.

On the Alfa I would guess they are an attempt at streamlining.

I did some research :) I have the Simon Moore book about "the 2.3 legend" :all the 3 parts have a lot of pictures of 2.3 in the MM with covers but not a word about it. But after some googling I found a PDF about a 2.9 owners and he tells

"it was a safety feature: the MM team found out that white light caused animal to freeze on the road and red did not effect them"

Sounds plausible
