Ive got one of the Duvall WS frames for the Monogram Big Deuce.I need to cut the frame and remove a small section, can pewter be soldered? How would I go about working with this without destroying the WS frame,Thanks.
Melting temp is just under 400* (375 +/-) so you need to be careful. To answer your question directly, yes you can solder it but its tricky.
First try a test on the back underside to make sure the solder your using will take. The material is mostly tin so most lead based solders should work fine. I would try something with a very low melting temp to start. Also use a heat sink on both sides to reduce radiant heat into the rest of the part.
Don't bother with silver solder I'm sure it would work but the temp range concerns me.
One last thing. As with welding aluminum it goes from a solid to liquid in about 1 second so be patient and take your time.![]()
I bought mine from Perry's Resina while back. I believe he is still making them.
Mike Gradis of EDeuce sells one too. He posts them on ebay all the time, his ebay username is "mikegradis"
Hope this helps
Since pewter melts at such a low temperature, I wonder if it can be molded in the silicone molds you use for resinmolding?
Does anybody know?
Tim
Beware the lollipop of mediocrity, lick it once and you will suck forever.....!!!
Check in the MicroMark catalog there is a silicone resinformulated for metal casting
. Also keep in mind that you will need to use talc powder in the mold before casting
into it and it helps the pre heat, or do a couple of test casts to warm up the mold to get quality parts. They offer just about everything you would need to cast metal, even a how to booklet.
