I never lost the enthusiasm for model tractors that I had when I was a young lad, but until recently didn't have any tractors in my collection. I acquired a number of 1/12th scale Franklin Mint diecast tractors on Ebay which, to my eye, are painfully clean and shiny. They all have a few glaringly obvious screwheads and other detail compromises. This is my first attempt at making one look a little more world weary.

My 1:16th dioramas are now on permanent display at the Canada Aviaion and Space Museum,in Ottawa,Canada. The apprailals for the museum were done by Shep Paine who valued them at between $15,000 and $25,000 (US) each.

I swear I thought I was looking at a real tractor. That's a masterful job of weathering Farmall Model H Tractor . It really improves the look over the spanky clean one.

Nicely done Jon. I spent a lot of hours operating our trusty "H" on the family farm in the 60's. Seems to me you got the correct looking grime & gunk in all the right places. THANKS for the trip down memory lane.

Rick, I'm pleased you like it. I googled up a whole load of reference photos to help get it right, and I've seen plenty of farm machinery in my time, so it's not that hard to make it believable.

Very nice weathering Farmall Model H Tractor and a big improvement on the shiney one. Well done Jon. May I make a sugestion? A few more oil leaks would look great with that dust and chipped paint. What did you use for the rust? It's pretty good.

    Dave,

The rust was my first attempt at using a product called Scenic Rust by Deluxe Materials. It is actually ferrous particles in a suspension compound which is applied, left to dry, then activated - so it actually rusts. It might be a bit coarse on smaller scales, but seems to work OK at 1/12th. I'm planning to do a completely rusted out Farmall at some stage.
