Hi – Just discovered this site; but I’ve been building models for 45 years (they just get bigger, and some actually get completed!). The 1/8th scale Ford GT humbles me – my skills are not in that league. But, one current project is a 1/12 scale tube frame Porsche 914 – bashed up from a Tamiya935 – the body is almost ready for prime and I will post pics. The rest of the 100’s of parts are coming together, including a twin turbo V8.
The other project is a 1/6th scale Indy Car, circa 1976; while not specific, it looks like a Lightning, Vollstedt, or Parnelli. This era cracked 200 at Indy. Before the Cosworths started to dominate in 1978, the Offenhauser was the engine to beat (apart from the Ford-Foyt V8 on occasion). This project was inspired by the GMP diecast Offy turbo – that was about 30% of the car almost completed right there. The monocoque and body I have scratch builtand are basically done; the wings are relatively easy, and I’ve collected most other parts. These cars were basically angular aluminum boxes, and at this scale it's close to working with the real thing so everything is quite do-able.
The big tires: a friend graciously machined some magnificent 6-spoke wheels for me out of aluminum, but he’s not around to ask him again to turn the tires. I need two blanks; one front and one rear; I already have the adhesive tire lettering in Goodyear font to apply to the sidewalls for raised lettering, and will cast them in blue/black/black resin.
Is there someone that can help lathe these blanks? The rears would be about 4.5 inches diameter and 2.5 inches wide (like a bagel!); the fronts are 4 and 3/16th diameter and 1 ¾ wide at the wheel. The wheel diameter is 2.5 inches. (I can provide the exact measurements and the sidewall profiles). These should be relatively simple, and I can pay a fair price, but I’ve just lost a lot of time trying to find some help - I don't have a lathe.
Any replies welcome, and I’ll post some pics. Thanks . . .
