I'm scratchbuilding a version of the (proposed) Bugatti Land Speed Record car. I'd like to include the engine bay (or engines bay), but I'm struggling to find detailed dimensions of the engine, and was directed here by another modelling site.
Are there any publications with decent scale drawings of the engine? Or barring that, does anyone here have a kit, and would be willing to take some pics of the kit engine next to a ruler for me? It would be much appreciated.

Wow! Is that gorgeous! I've never seen this proposal. Was it going to use the Type 50B engines? They were also used in the airplane that Bugatti made, and though the gentleman who was spearheading the reconstruction of that plane as a flying aircraft has died, I think that the group working on it has a website and links that you might find useful.
The Bugatti Trust also has a lot of blueprints and such.
And the Pocher model Type 50 engine, is a start.
I believe the "B" was externally the same as the production engines, with different carbs.
I have some dimensions, at home and I'll look them up tonight.

It was supposed to use [I]three [/I]Type 50 engines for a top speed of 450 km/h. Never seemed to get beyond a couple of pencil sketches though - apparently the French government wasn't interested in Jean Bugatti's proposal, so there wasn't any funding. But as you said, it looks amazing, so why let the fact that it never actually existed get in the way of a cool model!

LOL, I can definitely get the files; it's my CAD model. Which, yes, will be a master for 3D printing (in 1/43 though - it'd be nearly 1 metre long in 1/8). Guess I should have mentioned that.
That's the current state of the project - body shell is more or less done, just needs an interior, but if I can't get the engines sorted, it will have to stay as a curbside.
I had to go into work today, (can't afford to say no), -so, I did not have a chance to dig up some info for you, but I definitely have some. The type 50 engine was also used on the Type 53 four wheel drive car, and I have been back-burnering that as a project for 15 years!
Lots of pictures, not too sure about dimensions, but maybe?

Just slice it into sections. Slice off the fenders, that's 4-8 prints. Then slice the body like a sub sandwich and that's another 4-8 print. It'll take a week to print but that would make for one impressive model.Originally Posted by MoFo

As for the engine just pick up a Pocher KM76 kit and copy that. All the details between engines and how they mated together will require some creative license since I don't think any real blueprints exist.
PS. If you don't mind sending me the files I would love to try and print one at a smaller scale. I use Solidworks and Audocad with a Prusa MK3.

Daniel's right about the chassis and mounts. Bugatti never got into welded tube frames, not while Ettore nor Jean were alive.
For insight on how that might have looked, you'll have to look at some of the other large LSR cars, the Bluebirds, or the Sunbeams, or others. The Alfa Bimotore.

Thanks! Looking forward to it. The Bugatti archive is indeed a great reference source, and I've probably got enough pics that I can design the actual parts needed... I just need to know how big to make it. And yeah, I could just buy the Pocher engine kit, but I'd rather not shell out for the kit just to take a handful of measurements for a 1/43 engine, so I'm viewing that as a last resort.
As for the files... they're not really print ready at the moment, but I may make them available when they're finished.

I do have the remains of a Pocher Bug engine tucked away, which I will dig up and measure for you.
-going online, The Bugatti Revue, there are posted several useful pictures of the Type 50B engines that had been meant for the Bugatti airplane. As you can see, it does indeed appear surprisingly different from the engines in the cars.

The Pocher engine has already been recommended it the mode! Is 1/8 scale. If you are looking to build this in 1/24 scale the Heller /Airfix kit will yield the engine that you want. I have seen a 1/43 scale model of this car built without any engine retail a number of years ago. I think that it may have been issued / sold as a white metal kit originally by Grand Prix Mode!s here in the UK.
