        One day I saw a picture of this car, and that started a search that took 2 years and some 400 e-mails.












        This car is not well known and inspite of my research the true story has not been found. Some articles state that this is one of the 2 "IMSA" Ferrari F-40, that has been modified, but these 2 cars still exist today.
        My guess is that the chassis was completely custom build, and that only an original F-40 body and engine was used.
        The Barchetta was owned by the belgian racing driver Jean "Beurlys" Blaton, and it has been extensively modified. First the custom build chassis was installed, later it was rebuild as a barchetta (or spider). The engine work was done by Michelotto, the body work by Tony Gilette (who also builds the Gilette Vertigo).
        It received an F1-type suspension (horizontal springs, sort of the the type you find in the F-50 and Enzo). The entire exhaust system was altered, the exhaust pipes come out at both sides, just in front of the rear wheels.
        Specifications : electronic injection Weber-Marelli IAW, 2 turbos IHI with 2 Behr intercoolers, pressure 2,5 Bar, 760 BHP at 7800 RPM, gearbox Enforced Hewland 5 speed + reverse (Crabots), weight 800 kg, rims BBS E-19 style 3-piece magnesium centerlock racing with Goodyear tyres, topspeed 360 km/hr.

        A lot of work will be needed to make it look like the 1/1 car, and I hope that I will succeed in finishing it. (Sofar, it's been a real nightmare, with a lot of headaches )

        OK, here we go :

        First thing I did was cut the ducts out of the front bonnet, and put them in the "side walls", just in front of the rear wheels :

      Here's are some pics of the work I did during the last 3 years.

      The cooling vents were opened up with a Dremel Ferrari F-40 "Beurlys" barchetta, Pocher 1/8 :



      I cut the roof off :





      Widened the doors and made the firewall from plasticard :



      Rebuild the sidewalls and tunnel of the "cockpit" :



      Made the hole (left side of picture) for the headlights bigger :



      Opened the louvers on the front hood :



      Reshaped the louvres because they were to wide (left side is reshaped) :



      Reshaped them for the third and final time :



      And used my Dremel Ferrari F-40 "Beurlys" barchetta, Pocher 1/8 to change this :



      Into this :

      The metal body is quite heavy, Pocher designed the chassis so that it can take the weight :



      But with the Beurlys, this is all that will remain :



      I started with a piece of plexiglass :



      This will hold the brass tubes for the engine mount. The long metal tube will go through the engine and gearbox to take the weight of the body :



      So far so good :



      The gearbox is from Hewland, this will be scratchbuild :

      Pascal, you asked about the photos. The best way is to upload them into an album in the SMC Gallery then use those photos in your post. We ask members to do that just in case your current photo hosting changes. Now your using Modelbouw. If they change a setting or that site closes then we loose all the images and your thread dies because theres no images to follow.

      That's a good point, Dan. I use Photobucket and it's been a royal pain to keep things straight at times. With the way it works now, it's a lot easier.

      Being a Barchetta, the walls of the cockpit are wider than that of a factory F40. This was my first try :





      The second took a lot of work :












      Then the sidewalls started to look "ginormous", but compared with the pics of the real car, they look just right :

      Looks like it's been a while since there was ay posting about this build, but I found an article about this car and you probably already have this info. It looks like a fascinating build of a fascinating car with a great story behind it. Looking forward to seeing the finished product.
