I know this isn't a large scale airplane, but it will be very detailed in every way I can think of. I've ordered Eduards Photo Etch Kits, True Details Resin B-17 Flying Fortress parts, Squadron B-17 Flying Fortress Canopies, and as you can see by the pictures below, scratch building a lot of components. All flight surfaces will move as well.

Picture 1 - Tail Wheel Assembly before soldering together
Picture 2 - Tail Wheel Assembly soldered up and in place. The jack screw support was too big so I made another one.
Picture 3 - Tail Bulkheads, Tail Wheel Housing ready for paint. I'll make the canvas after the housing is installed
Picture 4 - Elevator hinge components
Picture 5 - Elevator attached to the Horizintal Stab with a hinge pin
Picture 6 - Elevators in the down position
Picture 7 - Elevators in the up position

Thanks to xken for teaching me the art of soldering and working with brass

If anyone has access to B-17 blue prints / drawings, please e-mail me. I would like to borrow them during htis build. Thanks

Late model B-17G's had a design change from the others that allowed the waist gunners to have more room too move. Earlier versions had the right and left gunner stations directly opposite each other. Waist gunners sometime in the heat of battle, would accidental disconnect the others oxygen line. More times than one, they didn't realize there was a problem until it was too late. Staggering the windows eliminated this problem.

My model will reflect this and a new Cheyenne turret that I'm trying to locate. If anyone has a 1/48 Cheyenne Tail they want to part with, please let me know.

    Pictures left to right

Eduards Ammo Boxes - Will be painted to simulate wood
Eduards Ball Turret Ammo Boxes - Will be painted Aluminum
Eduards Waist Gunner Casing Bags - Will be painted Olive Drab to simulate a cloth bag

The relocation of the right hand waist gunner is complete. I assembled the aux generator which is located just inside the crew rear access door, and scratch built B-17 Flying Fortress the generator.

Today I received access to the B-17 Erection and Maintenance Manual. that's the good news.

The bad news is my tail wheel is not right.

Back to the drawing board. Do I make it operate? I'm going to try......

I also corrected the bad paint on the generator shelf this morning.

    Cheers

Welcome to my world, just check and make sure you are dealing with the correct model of plane. I go back and fix, modify or replace stuff all the time during a build when you find that one piece of information you did not have before. I just finished the rear axle hangers on the T because in the rear photo it just was not proportional. I am still trying to sort out the external rear brakes which were not standard on the T but looks like a racing modification reto fit.

Keep up the great work! Ken

New tail wheel is done less paint. It functioned for 2 retractions then it all broke. Trying to keep things to scale and still operate is almost impossible (for me). Anyway, the tail wheel does turn and rotate freely, so that's better than nothing I guess. The ammo casing bags are also installed and need detail added.

Taking a couple of days off to go to Chicago for my sons graduation from UTI.

WOW......After looking at the picture of the right fuselage where I moved the window, I still have a lot of clean up work to do.......

We just home from my sons graduation in Chicago. Had a great time and we're really proud of him. When we arrived home, a package from Revel was in the mail box. My Cheyenne turret. Unbelieveable.......Didn't cost me a dime. What a great company.

Anyway....here's the proud parents and the graduate, and the Cheyenne turret

    Cheers

Long day today. What started off as a day to get the Cheyenne tail detailed and finish the tail of the aircraft ended up a day of relocating the right waist gunners window again. Thanks to a member of another forum I belong too.

Right waist gunners position relocated again to the correct position inside
Right waist gunners position relocated again to the correct position outside

Did a lot of detail work yesterday. The waist gunners guns and a bunch of Eduards details. I will add the cooling jackets to the guns today after the paint dries.

In Vietnam our .50's on the CH-46's were waist guns from B-17's and B-24's, and many of the ammo cans had 1944 and 1945 dates on them. Never had a problem or a jam with the .50's. Could not say the same for the 46's.

Keep up the great build you are doing.
