        Hi guys! Just joined today.I have been building 1/16th dioramas based upon the Model Airways kits for about 10 years now.They are destined for the Canada Aviation Museum this Fall.

      Hello John!

      Beautiful work! Is this to be part of a display? museum setting? Is there a story to this?

      My first model loves were ship models. I really was a nut about wooden ships and everything about them. I did move onto aircraft of the first world war. And then I started to discover, MODELS, just models of anything. Anything, everything! -I have seen models of staircases that just enthrall me! A customer friend of mine made a superb model of a stand-alone cement mixer, the type used at construction sites. -I have always been involved with models and model makers, but I never had thought to return to "wooden ships" until a few years back, one of my bosses asked me if I knew how to make "stuff look like distressed wood?" He proposed a test piece, and when I returned it to him, he pronounced "Wow! You really know how to paint "BADLY" -I mean how to make it look bad!"

      These two photos I found online, but the work is mostly mine and or directed by me. My right hand man, painter, was Abraham Morales, he did the decks, railings and mast. We had two painter helpers, and a team of men directed by Abraham, applying Z-Grip,(Bondo). -We used more than 80 gallons of the stuff!

      What method do you use to make wood silver-gray-old, I have tryed the steelwool in vinegar, but can't get the silvergray out in pinewood, don't know why ?

      I will still be working in 1:16th but I will be adding other large scales too for my upcoming vignettes.I have had to downsize my work because of my age (77) and the difficulty I have moving them around and reaching where I want to go.Vignettes are much more comfortable to work with now.Cheers!

      I'm guessing the pink foam insulation represents ice and snow as in a ship stuck in an ice flow that breaks apart. Great work! Is this of a particular polar exploration ship such as one of Shackleton's trips?

      No, the pink foam is actually areas that have yet to be covered with sand How I Build Dioramas. .This ship is a generic pirate of the era.I mostly do my dioramas for kids and I just couldn't resist knowing the way kids love pirates.I know I sure did.Cheers! John.

      I am still working on how to post pics to the gallery.I should figure it out today.I am now back into modeling cars and trucks exclusively as I really enjoy the fun of weathering How I Build Dioramas. a single subject and not putting them in dioramas that are now too large for me to handle now.Besides they are easy to put in cases and give to my family to put on shelves without taking up a lot of space.I will be building all subject matter metal,plastic etc..I have some diecasts that I would like to tear down and rebuild,finish up some plastic kits and build and weather some old Hubely kits I bought years ago.The deusy that I have already weathered I will repair and put it in a barnfind setting with an old wood floor and part of a wall.Should be fun!
