I Caught up with my old mate Barry last week end at a model display our club did but he didn't have all his wrecks there, so I went over to his house for a photo session.

Now, he did tell me what all the cars and trucks are but I didn't write it down and now I can't remember what they are. I do know most are 1/25 scale and a couple of 1/35. Some of you will be able to identify a few of them, but it doesn't really matter what they are, this is about what Barry has done with and/or to them. This is what he loves to do, and being retired, he has plenty of time to get right into it. Not one model in his collection is show room shiny, everything is weathered or wrecked to some degree. Watching him work is like watching a magician do tricks. Amazing.

A couple of years ago a bushfire went through not far from here, so off went old mate with camera, and some time later this is what he came up with. The sticks (burnt trees) and ashes came from his fireplace.

Thanks Rick, I'll tell him you like them. He's pretty good at it, and very fussy too.
This is one of his early builds. Not as good as he would like it to be, which made him try harder. Now he really has it all worked out, and each one gets better. I'm not sure in which order they should go, but it doesn't matter, they're all good. He's been telling me about the next few on the drawing board and I can't wait to see them, but he likes to surprise, so I can't say what they are yet. We will find out when the time is right and I will post photos then.

    Dave.

There's not much I can tell you about this one. It was finished a few months ago.

it is harder to make a piece look destroyed than it is to make it look perfect. This is weathering Car wrecks by Barry. and patina at it's finest. Love it - thanks for sharing.

Andy, you are right, it's much more difficult to get that old rusted out and dinged up look. I've only tried it with my 2 little bikes. It makes you think a whole new way about how to get the affect you want, and when you're used to doing shiny stuff it's hard to get your head around the rust and dirt concept.

This is a 1/35 scale Russian Army truck and the first model I saw suffering from the 'Barry affect' as we now call it here at our local model club.

This is Barry's latest model. It's another Russian Army truck, some kind of missile launching thing that almost received a direct hit from an Allied bomb. It was close enough to make a big mess of things.

The first photo is with the flash Car wrecks by Barry. turned off and the rest are with the flash Car wrecks by Barry. on.

I just noticed all the photos in the first post were missing so I've tried to fix them up a bit. These photos were in the first post but now I've replaced them down here.
On one of his outback fact-finding photo-taking tours, my friend found a rusty relic in the middle of nowhere. Upon returning home armed with a bunch of reference photos, he set to work and re-created the scene in 1/25th scale.

David, any chance we could persuade you into writing up a few tutorials on how you get these amazing results?

And thanks for fixing the pics. The recent site changes had a few side effects and were still fixing things.

Hi Dan. Sorry mate, I can't do a tutorial on this stuff. Well not yet anyway. For starters, it's not my work. My friend Barry, who is retired, pops these out at about one a month. He has given me permission to watch and photograph the whole process to put on SMC, but the problem is that I work way too many hours to be able to do this . It won't be forgotten, just awaiting the opportunity.

The photo fix-up was not a problem. I knew when I saw the blank spaces it was from the site changes.

Now, this is what I came back to this thread for. Old mate Barry's latest master piece. How good would it be to watch this one come together? Based on a large handful of photos of an actual jeep graveyard, Barry went and bought about a dozen 1/35th scale jeep kits and made them all rapidly deteriorate in this little slice of jungle. He told me that he was thinking about doing this model, but I didn't know he had started it until I saw this last Saturday. After I took a heap of pics of it he told me it's not finished yet, so an update will come later. But for now, please enjoy "Jeeps in the jungle".
