There is no substitute for straight real wire in wire wheels as Nick has demonstrated.
It can be done with thin round plastic rod but would not be as robust.

Not necessarily - this is just a bit of light relief from hollowing out the volcano.

We heard the eruption in NZ. A lot of low booming that went on for a long time. Tonga is 2,200km away (1367 miles...)

    Hello Jo!

I was wondering if you had heard it. That is amazing!

I think that world-wide there are a hundred or so active volcanoes. By geologist and vulcanologist standards, of what constitutes an active volcano, we have several here on the west coast of North America, and a "Super Caldera" is another way at looking at Yellowstone Park.

Our Mt. Saint Helens of 42 years ago.

But what happened at Tonga, . . . we're not getting much news here in the states as we are preoccupied with our own madness, but I heard that the people of Tonga were unable to hear anything but the booming. Our weather instrumentations, barometers and such did record the passing of it's shockwave, and we're pretty far away.

they are covered in about 20cm of ash. clearing the runway for landings. Oz and NZ aid arriving but the undersea cable to Fiji is broken, so very little comms. Will take 4 weeks to fix. In the meantime NZ Tongans filling containers with relief aid, especially canned goods and water. NZ Navy has taken desalination plants to Tonga. This was a big eruption....
