After years of building in 1/8 i've decided to try something completely new - a 100% scratch built Rolls Royce Phantom II in 1/6 Scale car in 1/6 scale. I'm kinda burnt out on Pochers and really want a new kind of challenge.

The car is going to be the long wheelbase Rolls-Royce Phantom II. The build will be documented in this thread with updates posted as often as possible. I have no idea if I can even pull this off, but since I'm not positive that I can't I figure i'll give it a shot.

Usually I start my builds with the engine but in this case I'm going to start with the chassis so I can establish my reference points for everything else. The photo below shows the raw frame rails. I used my mill to rough out the shape in a single piece of brass then used the belt sander for the final contouring. Once I had the shape I fed the single piece length-wise through a band saw to end up with two pieces. I took this route to ensure that both rails were absolutely identical in shape and size.

Once I had two identical rails I went back to the mill to trim them down to the proper thickness. Next up is to mill out the insides of the solid brass rails in preparation for detailing.

The black frame rail in the photo is a 1/8 scale RR Phantom II frame rail from a Pocher kit. The 1/6 rails are machined out of solid brass and are just a tick shy of 35" in length from stem to stern.

Stay tuned for more pics as the build progresses.

Andy.

Andy,

Looks like you have taken a big bite of the "Brass Apple" you are going to have a great project and I will look forward to your updates.
It must be nice to work that large compared to what I am normally doing. I hope you bought shares in Home - Special Shapes Company these are the guys I get a great deal of my stock from that I cannot get at the recycling yard.

Wow! This is going to be a monster of a car. Very cool mate.
It might be a bit too early to ask this question but I'm wondering if you have thought of a colour for it.

Dave - While I'm probably at least a year to 18 months away from body work (and that's being optimistic), I have been thinking about a two tone black/dark blue or black/dark green. I'm pretty sure it will be a two tone town car type color scheme with an exposed aluminum belt line.

I have not decided yet if I'm goint to paint the bonnet yet though. I may leave that exposed and polished aluminum.

Andy.

Ken - I can only hope that my build comes out as amazingly as your E-Type.

I just wish there was a book out there that I could read that focused on model building in brass. That would be great. Why hasn't anyone ever written a book like that?

Can't tell if you're kidding, but Ken DID write the book on building in brass. If others haven't seen it, here it is...

Sj - I'm kidding. Just giving Ken a hard time (because someone has to).

Andy, the rails looks like you have a great start. Hard to believe there is that much difference in size bet between 1:8 and 1:6 but I know, I have dabbled in 1:6 with a couple of engines. I am shocked at your seeming lack of confidence man, I am sure that this will be a fantastic build to watch and a BEAUTIFUL car to display once it is done.

The only thing I might warn you about...remember the commercial for margarine..."Don't fool with Mother Nature?"

Well, I wouldn't fool to much with Ken "The Brass God" Foran either.

1/6 is making double length of what I'm doing in 1:12! For the tools I have at disposal, 1:6 is too large. Furthermore, many details can not be neglegted.
Somebody built a Duesenberg scale 1:6 with running engine...Sorry, I don't remember the name of that gentleman.

Roger - the Duesenberg was built by Louis Chenot. And seeing that Model is what gave me the idea to build this one.

Thank you Andy for refreshing my memory! Did you see that model "face to face" or just in pictures? Anyway, an impressive construction.

I have seen pics of it but not sure I knew that the engine ran. I know you are going for internals of the engine and such but if you make it run I for one would for real!
