After years of building in 1/8 i've decided to try something completely new - a 100%
scratch built
car in 1/6 scale. I'm kinda burnt out on Pochers and really want a new kind of challenge.
The car is going to be the long wheelbase Rolls-Royce Phantom II. The build will be documented in this thread with updates posted as often as possible. I have no idea if I can even pull this off, but since I'm not positive that I can't I figure i'll give it a shot.
Usually I start my builds with the engine but in this case I'm going to start with the chassis so I can establish my reference points for everything else. The photo below shows the raw frame rails. I used my mill to rough out the shape in a single piece of brass then used the belt sander for the final contouring. Once I had the shape I fed the single piece length-wise through a band saw to end up with two pieces. I took this route to ensure that both rails were absolutely identical in shape and size.
Once I had two identical rails I went back to the mill to trim them down to the proper thickness. Next up is to mill out the insides of the solid brass rails in preparation for detailing.
The black frame rail in the photo is a 1/8 scale RR Phantom II frame rail from a Pocher kit. The 1/6 rails are machined out of solid brass and are just a tick shy of 35" in length from stem to stern.
Stay tuned for more pics as the build progresses.
Andy.
