We begin this build with the essential mainframe...
The Alfa's mainframe consists of the 2 frame sides (L & R), 3 plastic crossmembers and 3 metal crossmembers...the metal crossmembers are each composed by a central threaded rod, a concentric metal tubing and 2 washers and 2 nuts....I made some brass acorn nuts to replace the Pocher ones...
The plastic parts were deflashed, sanded as well as possible and in this stage all the drilling and tapping to assemble the frame were made in order to avoid gluing
anything...
After everything was tried for good fitting, this parts were given 3 coats of automotive acrylic
primer
(White) and set aside for a week....
Then, the primer
was sanded with 1000 grit wet sandpaper and washed in detergent...
3 coats of acrylic
lacquer
were given with the final Alfa red color, using 1500 grit sandpaper in between coats...every coat was left 48 hours to dry...
The last coat was finally sanded with 2500 grit wet sandpaper, then polished with Brasso, using only cotton patches...the final gloss was achieved with 3M Hand Glaze, also applied with cotton patches....
After fiddling with the painted parts during assembly, a last protective coat will be applied using carnauba car wax...(avoids fingerprints and static)
Pic 1 shows the frame sides, whose plastic rivets were sanded, drilled and replaced by brass 1 mm head rivets...
Pic 2 shows the reflection of my headlamp on the frame left side, showing the gloss achieved, which is fine with me....
Pics 3, 4 and 5 shows closeups of the frame sides to show the riveting details and some special scratchbuilt parts added...
Pics 6, 7 and 8 shows the plastic crossmembers already painted and tapped to receive the scale hardware which assembles them to the frame sides...
Pic 9 shows the front metal crossmember, to which a hand crank bracket was added (The kit doesn't provide it and this is present on the prototype)
Finally, pics 10 and 11 shows the other metal crossmembers and part of the special scale hardware that will be used in this subassembly..............
