As I get further along in my building of the Alfa 8C 2300 Muletto, I am curious about some details of the car. Can anybody help?

1. Alfa Wing
In this image at Pebble Beach, this Monza has a rare wing attached. What is it and why is it there?

2. Instrument ID
I am building a display chassis (now more scratchbuilt than Pocher parts) and will be wiring it. Can anyone identify these cockpit instruments?

2a. Two instruments (detail D) look similar...please explain? What are the others?

3. Ignition ID
It seems that several ignition systems exist...images of two are shown here. It looks as if one unit has a key, a petcock, and what certainly can't be a 3/4" phone jack?

The other ignition is simple...a petcock and a button? What am I missing?

4. Wiring Diagram
Here is the only wiring diagram that I have found. Anyone have a more complete and legible diagram?

5. Anybody Know Italian?
I lived in Italy for two years, but my Italian is lousy. What are these identifiers on the wiring block?

6. Baffled By Batteries
Some Monza have external battery boxes, others don't. Where is the battery stored if it is internal? I don't think Pocher's placement under the drivers feet is correct...

Thanks in advance for your help. Perhaps Daniel can save this thread somewhere on the site for other's reference?

#1 The wing protects the driver from mud, stones, and other debris on the road at the time.

#3 Its not a petcock. The top item is the button for the starter. The center is the on/off key. The bottom selects lighting; off - parking (running) - headlights & parking.

#2 A - pressure pump for fuel. B - clock. C - Looks to be an Ammeter. (showing discharge) D - Tachometers. Why 2? Good question. E - Fuel level? Hard to tell.

#6 I believe the battery and tool box were between the passenger compartment and fuel tank. Note - there would have been a tool box on the opposite side of the pictured car.

#4 I don't.
#5 My Italian is like my Mandarin Chinese. Non-existent. (sorry, I couldn't resist)

Happy New Year!

Doug,

After mulling it over, I suspect the second tachometer is a backup. A speedometer would be unneeded.

It is possible that some Monzas did not have a battery. Magneto ignintion does not need battery power, so the engine could have been started using a hand crank. The generator would then supply electical power to the lights, if so equipped.

Have fun researching! Be aware that sometimes a photo or 2 of 6C1750 chassis are posted as an 8C2300.

Doug,

I found this while Googling

Current issue

It has an article about a Mulleto built from parts. I've not seen it, so I can't say if its worth buying.

Hi Doug,

the 8C2300 racers had two rev counters instead of a rev counter and a speedo.

Both counters were driven by the camshafts. The reason seems to be that the counters were prone to failure and/or quite imprecise.
