Hi everyone. I'm new to this site but thought you might like to see photos of my Pocher Rolls scratchbuilt project. I bought the kit assuming it would be highly detailed and faithful to the original. Some parts are great such as the chassis rails, spoked wheels, radiator and basic engine blocks. Once I started researching the car, I soon realised that a lot of the parts are not at all accurate and some are completely out of scale i.e. carburettor and foot pedals. I am lucky that I have one of the foremost vintage Rolls Royce restoration specialists only four miles from where I live and they have been a great help in letting me photograph and measure real Phantoms which they are working on. I then decided to make my model as accurate as I could possibly make it so, although I am using stock parts where they are good enough (after some reworking) most of the rest of the model, down to every visible nut and bolt, is being scratchbuilt from brass or aluminium. This is going to be a very long project to complete but most of the engine and gearbox is done and I am now working on the firewall (bulkhead) and pedals. There is over 100 hours work in the firewall which is made from sections of aluminium sheet welded together and the electrical conduit which runs round the face of the firewall is made up of 72 separate parts. This is a great site and I have really enjoyed reading through the threads.

Hi again. Sorry for the delay in replying but I have been away. I am now working on the inside of the two chassis rails. There is electrical conduit which runs the full length of the chassis (and crosses from side to side) which is supported on 18 aluminium brackets. There are also several aluminium branching tees where the conduit bends through 90degrees. There are two fuel lines which run inside the left hand chassis rail from fuel tank to firewall and on the model, these lines are only 0.6mm diameter. Finally there are the oil lines for the oneshot lubrication system which runs all over the chassis and axles. This has 20 separate unions where the pipes join and is fastened to the chassis rail by 35 separate saddle clips, each with it's own nut and bolt. I am going to be busy for some time as long as my eyesight holds out!!! I will post more photos when it is ready.

Absolutely fabulous research and workmanship! Top marks!!!

Just out of curiosity will you be narrowing the frame to be more accurate? I've been thinking of doing that, but I'm not sure how to correct things such as the spring mount pads on the front axle.

    Thanks for sharing

To be long-winded about the measurements: :)

From drawings I have seen, the RR frame is 37" wide starting at the rear, narrows to 35" at the center, then narrows again to 30" at the front.

As I measure the Pocher frame: 39" at the rear tapering to 35" at the center and 31.5" at the front. (of course being plastic these are not as precise as RR's)

I became curious why there were recesses in the Pocher frame at the mounting points for the rear spring shackles. None of the photos I have seen of actual RR frames show any sign of these recesses.

I wonder if Pocher had to widen the frame to accommodate a wider battery box when they decided to put batteries for the lights there.

I believe they come from R-R drawing F81381 as published in The Rolls-Royce 40/50hp Ghosts, Phantoms and Spectres written by W J Oldham (1974).

This is the drawing originally supplied to coachbuilders by R-R. Great drawing but some parts are illegible because its a copy of an old original, and printed much smaller.

The book itself is out of print but may be available at libraries or found online at eBay, ABEBOOKS.COM, ALIBRIS.COM, or BOOKFINDER.COM

I have the 1958 edition of Rolls Royce, The Living Legend. It contains over 350 photos and line drawings that would be helpfull to anyone doing a Pocher build. I'm selling it along with a large collection of automotive publications and video's.

If interested, contact me off site @ rick21142@shaw.ca.
