Brilliant thread from RR Boat Tail contributor. I've got a box of Pocher RR bits that I have been wondering what to do with.
It's basically just a chassis and wheels. Fortunately the RR Radiator is included, and it's one of the old originals made from soldered brass and plated Pocher Rolls Royce Boat Tail . I also found a small article with a few B&W photos of a Boat tail that was taken at a RR meeting here in England in a company magazine for an adhesives company. It's one of those projects where you store the bits and article for 20 years or more and then see something like your contributors thread that gets the interest going again. Now that I am close to retirement and have just fitted out a nice little workshop it's a project to get stuck into.

The Hornby thing!!!! I spoke to one of the Hornby team at the 2007 ScaleModelworld Show and I was told that they have no immediate plans to resurrect any of the Pocher model kits.
I expect that they have enough to contend with having acquired Airfix recently. The Pochers were simply part of the Rivarossi acquisition to get the model railway stuff, Hornby's core business. Personally I cannot see Pochers being marketed again unless Hornby sell it on maybe to a Chinese company who may be able to keep the cost down.
One thing surprises me about Pocher when they were in business, is that they did not tap into the American market with a Duesenberg SJ Derham bodied tourer or something. It is a model I would dearly would have liked to see them make, but alas that was not to be. Wouldn't that be a beauty in 1/8th scale?
Come on Trumpeter! How about you making some 1/8 or 1/12 scale classics?

    I miss my old 1964 650cc Matchless.
The flying M. Sigh, days go by so quickly.

Got rid of the bike and bought a 1966 Triumph TR4A - IRS
What a sled. My room mate raced a TR4, I worked at the dealer in the parts dept in Pacific Beach. (San Diego). Took .01 off the head, put S3 Cam in it and Abarth Exhaust.
Had a chrome roll bar, what a quick ride. Still ploughed through corners like a tractor. lol

Oh well, memory lane sometimes calls to me.

I read Tage's wish list on his thread.
There is a company named 'Auto Art' (I think) that can supply ready built Bugatti Type 35B mega buck models in metal in 1/8th scale.
Also,I was looking at Creative Miniature Associates website a short while ago and saw them
advertising a multi medium kit of the Ford GT40 Le Mans Coupe in 1/12 scale. Their photos showed extensive resin Pocher Rolls Royce Boat Tail mouldings plus cast and machined metal parts in the kit. They have kitted some more unusual automotive subjects that mainstream plastic kit manufacturers would not bother with due to the tooling up costs.
Aifix only brought out one large scale car kit, the 1/12 scale Bentley back in the early 70's and did'nt make any more. Rumours were going around shortly after they produced the Bentley that the Rolls Royce Silver Ghost at Beaulieu was to be the next. Did'nt happen!
Probably because Airfix could not get enough payback on the Bentley sales and it turned out to be a bit of an indulgence.
Today's market has changed a lot from the heyday of the 60's and 70's. Most kids seem to be more interested in playing computer games than model making so the market has dwindled a lot. Justifying tooling up for a large kit is a major manufacturing decision that could make or break a company today, as the large pocket money kit market that supported those indulgences has long gone. It's a sad fact of life, but there it is.
Our only hope is for companies like Trumpeter in China to take up the baton besides the
re-re-re-re releases from Revell Pocher Rolls Royce Boat Tail -Monogram.

The current ACA (now that J P Fontenelle has retired) is frustrating to deal with, poor customer service/communication and very disorganized. I doubt they will ever produce the cheaper CAD/CAM sourced kits they are bragging about, but I will be ecstatic if they do....

I have the T35 "Challanger" kit in question and I can say first hand I agree they have happily taken my money but with the abundance of missing parts I found in my Kit , they now don't wan't to know me when it comes to now replacing my parts !!! With an attitude like that I should'nt think this guy isn't going to be in business for very long anyway!

They took their bragging off the website, and now are bragging about a Type 57SC (Atalante), which probably will cost a fortune again...

After reading all the threads to this I had a dream that Tamiya Pocher Rolls Royce Boat Tail kitted a Bugatti Type 59 Grand Prix in 1/12th scale.
Would make a nice change from all the modern F1 cars they turn out.

Sigh... me, too. I am presently working to make a silk purse out of the Bburago diecast T59 kit, which is 1/16 (though marketed as 1/18). LOTS of challenges here, and it will never achieve true accuracy, but I'm forging on.

I too longed to see Pochers come back to the market place. And I have wondered myself why there are 1:8 Pochers of the finest British, Italian and German classics, but none of the Great American Classics (a Duesenberg SJ, a Cadillac 16, a Packard twelve, etc.).

Then I realized that there was an effective and inexpensive way to get the Pocher experience without actualy having the model.

What I did was, first, get a picture of an absolutely stunning Duesenberg SJ. Then I stared at that picture for hours. Next, I researched the Duesenberg SJ and acquired as many pictures as I could to prepare for the build.

OK - now this is where I had to get creative. Instead of trying to find a Pocher Duesenberg SJ kit, I went to home depot and got a nice hammer. Then I went home and stared at the picture of the Duesenberg while smashing my thumb with the hammer. And damn if it didn't feel exactly like building a Pocher.

When I was done, I didn't have a model that looked anything like the picture, I was out a few bucks and I was cursing profusely. So at the end of the day, IT WAS JUST LIKE BUILDING A POCHER!

As soon as my thumb heals up, I'm going to find a nice brick and "build" the Pocher Packard Boattail Speedster".

    Wish me luck.

That one cracked me up. On another note, someone wished for a large-scale Audi. Here's a 1:8 that the guy built ten of.

    Andy, you crack me up!
I acquired a Pocher Rolls Engine that had been glued together with Ambroid cement by a 12 year old. After cutting it apart and cleaning it up, I will take the JR Haddock approach to detailing it. Hope to have it in a crate next to the Rolls Royce Sedanca de Ville when done.

I have not started the Rolls Royce rebuild yet. When I start the rebuild I will take some before photos. It is really a mess.

Should be ready in two years...

Tage - I admire your courage. And I'm thrilled that I'm not the only one around here who doesn't start and finish a model both in the same calendar year.

Good luck and don't forget to post pics.

    Andy.

P.S. The hammer is also very good at separating those glued RR engine parts that just don't want to come apart.

Oh man, you cracked me up good. Where does it say you have to finish a model in the same calendar year you started it ?? The way I'm going, I won't have finished a model in the same decade. I thought the hobby was about building models, not finishing them.
