Prowling eBay a few weeks ago and came upon a deal I just couldn’t pass up. Hit Buy Now and received a Alfa Monza already built many years ago. As soon as I received, I tore it down, ordered some missing parts and am now working on the engine. There are many examples of this beautiful car underway here now. I am approaching this not as a pull out all stops detailed to the 10th degree, but to build without machining parts or super corrected. I have built this kit at least 5 times as detailed as my wallet would stand. This go, I hope to encourage that person wanting to build one w/o all the extra work and money. I am building as a racer that one might come across still burning up a track. Do not get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with scratch built Pocher Alfa 8C 2300 Monza frames of brass and machined parts. But I know guys who think you have to do this to get a decent rep of the Alfa. I hope to show using what comes in the kit with careful work turns out a nice piece.

    Hello Rick,

I have not done anything myself, with all the pictures / references that I have collected. Jo has made the steering box mounts and has posted his solution to the bearings, in his thread. I think his work is the most accurate I've seen, you should check out his thread. -the contours of that area, the space between the mounts is hard to realize, made more so by the scale. The pass-through holes are not a tube as the engine mounts are hollow, and the forward side of the pass-through is not a perfect circle, but you have to look at the picture to understand what its shape is, I don't know how to describe it. Look at the pictures of the underside to see how hollow the engine mounts are.

A few years ago, I was researching in preparation for a "Big" project, and the idea of using gasket sets to help determine the shape and dimensions of an engine, and its various components occurred to me. (Some people would say it Don'd on me) Photo etching is certainly a good idea, but the Pocher parts do not actually match these foot-prints? -so more work?

And that is the point that I am stalled at, at the drawing board trying to rectify given parts to gasket images, and with no known dimensions! Do you know any of the dimensions to any part of the engine? -Its sort of a sticking point with me.

I was concerned that I had given too much info, and that I might put you off your building your model? I hope I have not, and that was never my intent. Several modelers here have made these Alfas and each has contributed to pushing the bar a little higher. (The steering box itself has a hollow, but it can only be seen with the fire wall removed.)

I hope you have fun with your build and I look forward to watching your progress!

My friend you have not put me off of the build in anyway. There are areas that benefit great from correcting and then there are areas that just give one pleasure in having done so. Just like the openings on the rear engine block mounts. I was aware of this detail and always just left as Pocher designed. I have never opened this because I never added the control rod either. But as you pointed out, I never realized the legs on ea. side was hollow. But close examination of the photo you included shows this. So your info pointed out a feature I never knew.
Mr Don, you comment and suggest anything you wish too add. I look forward to help from any and all. If I feel up to the challenge I will try to implement that correction if possible or not. In the mean time, others will still benefit. Now, where’s those big drill bits.

Howdy all. Have not posted on this project for some time now. Hopefully will have some progress to post soon. Am waiting for some replacement parts!
I also have been tied up on another Pocher project as well.

I am very interested in following your build as I have one of these kits for nearly 40 years now. I have done some work and am now finally thinking of building this, probably with some modifications to move towards "correct". Not asking any questions at this point since I have not spent time searching this forum.

Just wondering, have you done anything with your project. The thread is a old one of mine and I have re-registered as RGH. I hope to post some work soon of where I am at with this long project. Upon tearing down the model, I discovered to my dismay the individual who had built the kit decided to use the screws and epoxy Pocher Alfa 8C 2300 Monza . Needless to say, the taking apart to rebuild has been quite frustrating. So since I started the thread, I have replaced most of the plastic main parts, purchased another build to tear down and ordered some items from my friend @ Model Motorcars Pocher Alfa 8C 2300 Monza . I have the engine about ready to shut up and paint. Look forward to seeing your work.

I am not sure of how to go about this. My computer from back when is not the same as now and I had to reregister on the site to access. I guess I will just keep posting the progress here or do I need to start another thread. I am sure admin will advice me.

Well, since the other basket case was for real a basket case, did provide a deceit engine block. I purchased another all ready built, but this one was assembled w/screws only. Now to get apart w/o breaking said screws. I have built many of these and I as stated in the beginning am looking to do a pretty much OOB Pocher Alfa 8C 2300 Monza build w/a few additions where I feel is a must or for those missing from the kit. I have always painted the traditional red/red brown color for the time frame of the car. This time I am going to try something different.

A little up date. The kit is dis-assembled and the parts kept in groups. Luckily I had the required broken parts from the 1st kit at the start of this thread. It was and is a glue bomb Pocher Alfa 8C 2300 Monza and I have salvaged whatever I could use. The 2nd kit was a bit of a surprise. When one looks at the photo above, you do notice the tires looking wonky, well after removal from the box, I would soon discover what I had just laid my hands too! It is painfully clear what had happen. While suspended in a set of hands, something occurred to wit, the car had hit the floor with enough force as to break into all four rubber leaf springs? So after surgery I was able between the two kits to make up all missing and or broken parts. I did order from eBay, a clear spur for the Alfa and a complete hood set. Of course, Model Motorcars Pocher Alfa 8C 2300 Monza will supply my added bling. And just so you know, while waiting on this one, been working on a RR Frame!
