      Scratch Built Build in Progress

I always wanted to build a Big Deuce as a total stocker- so here it goes. the fellow who did the model 18 roadster did an incredible job on the chassis. mine will have no where near the detail. but up top should be pretty nice. I located a 5 window body [second] from the late Mike Gradis. by the way he was a great guy and always went out of his way to help me with large scale parts from his big inventory.
I will use his body. Kelsey Hayes wheels from the Hot 1932 FORD Standard 5 window coupe 1/8 scale Canary.[had to find 3 kits for the set of 5 wheels] and a Flathead in resin 1932 FORD Standard 5 window coupe 1/8 scale from John Hockney. lots of scratch building and adaptations will be involved.........

the brake drums in the kit are too big-from a later v8- I want to see daylight through the wire wheels like the original. so I cut the hubs out of the drums and made smaller ones using pvc pipe- the backing plates also needed to be down sized.

the big deuce chassis only needs small details to bring it back to stock-one is getting rid of the telescopic or ''airplane'' shocks and replacing with the original Houdaille lever action shocks-in this case adapted from a Lindberg T kit

the big deuce only comes with a quick change differential-all chromed- first I stripped the chrome, then carefully cut out the quick change housing -fill in the voids and then added a gear oil fill plug.

the engine is almost done now. the intake was set up for triple carbs so its cut and fill and shape again. its looking more like a stock Flathead all the time.

its the small things that make a difference visually- the Flathead block comes in 2 pieces with the oil pan in the same casting 1932 FORD Standard 5 window coupe 1/8 scale so it leaves a seam right down the middle of the pan [front to back] it now looks much better filled and the drain plug detailed out

kit bashing 1932 FORD Standard 5 window coupe 1/8 scale the dash board: what I did to get the stock 3 gauge panel was...cut the 3 gauge panel from the custom chrome firewall [supplied in the kit] using an oval outline. next I drilled out the center gauge to the speedometer size. then I cut the speedometer bezel from the 5 gauge panel. set the gauges and then filled the bezels with epoxy 1932 FORD Standard 5 window coupe 1/8 scale to simulate lenses. then added the choke, throttle and dash light switches. the dash board was covered with plastic card shaped to fit and then outlined and cut out for the new panel to be glued in. this way I get to stay with the machine turned panel as per the original car.

moving right along here......more modifications. I decided it would be nice to have a folding hood like the original. I found some really nice piano hinges in the scrapyard- they were on an old 1/16 Entex Mercedes Cabriolet. cut the hood sides below the molding. on top I cut out the center only to keep the spacing in check and filed underneath until the hinges were flush with the top of the hood.with the top hinge then epoxied into place I should just be able to cut the ends and it will all line up...this should work pretty smooth......

over to the wheels....I figured out something for the hubcaps. I cut the heads off of 1/4 inch carriage bolts, covered them with aluminum tape and then glued them to the spinner hubcaps from the Lindberg model. low buck but nothing is like real metal. the V8 raised centers will be another story- any ideas out there?

This is a very nice project that you started. You have a lot of patience and very good skills. I love your hinged hood, detailed engine, gauges in the dash panel and all the rest. I hope that you will post more about this wip 1932 FORD Standard 5 window coupe 1/8 scale .
