This very much comes under the heading of future projects, but I believe it can be built from the Airfix kit, with a scratch built 1/12 Birkin Blower Bentley single seater body. I've already found some 3D print files for the body, which even if not accurate, could be used as the basis for a body buck.

      Has anyone attempted it?

The first wire wheel, using fishing line. It works!

    The locking tweezers helped enormously...

    Thanks, Don & Scott!

I've been busy mass producing parts - rims so far

1/12 Birkin Blower Bentley single seater-img_2727-jpg

    The jig follows Wingrove's design:

    Main points to watch
You need as much open area as possible (hence details like turned down fixing screws)
It needs to flex a little to ensure both parts are held without rotating
The rim and hub need to be in the correct vertical relationship. Once you've spoked the wheel, it's rigid!

The jig parts - rim and hub holding surfaces (or the bits that matter) are coloured...

The three part circles are what remains of the holding method for the roughly cut sheet. The chuck jaws grip the inside of the holes.

    Inside

    Outside

Now I need to make some hubs, and drill 560 0.6mm holes. See you in a while....

Good luck with the drilling! Have a couple spare bits, just in case...Are the rims made with aluminum? That metal is more difficult to drill than brass.

    Hello Jo!

If you have a supplier for watchmakers handy? Check into PIVOT type drills. They are like a spade drill bit. A very basic design that is the oldest type and now-a-days almost forgotten. But the benefit with their design, is that they are the least likely to travel. They are only for thin materials, and are easy to sharpen.

Also used by jewelers, for drilling pearls.

    GOOD LUCK!

    -Don

Roger, I have 9 drills left to break .
They are Swiss made Antilope drills, with a large shank so a little more stable. I'm drilling through 1mm of aluminium, using cutting lubricant to stop the drill from catching. I've also set up the rotary table on the Unimat, rather than the mill, as it has a lot more feel for drilling.

Don - I found a supplier of 0.6mm spade drills (tungsten carbide) in NZ, so will buy some when I've broken all the others.....

    Hello Jo!

I've restored those pictures that I unintentionally had removed when I created that new gallery. -And a friend from work asked me if paint will stick to the fishing line? I'm not a fisherman, so I don't know these things, but he said that some lines are "treated" to float on the water? Fly-fishing? I imagine that as the paint goes around the line it will if nothing else dry, and provide a mechanical bond, like a glove. But if it resists bonding to the line it might be prone to puddle at those points where the wires cross each other?

Good luck on the drilling! Are you experiencing a lot of breakage?
