This very much comes under the heading of future projects, but I believe it can be built from the Airfix kit, with a scratch built 1/12 Birkin Blower Bentley single seater body. I've already found some 3D print files for the body, which even if not accurate, could be used as the basis for a body buck.

      Has anyone attempted it?

The front chassis rail is next. The kit version, where the outer ends of the rail are made up of two parts sandwiching the chassis leg, is messy, so I took the plunge and cut it off...

Components for the new chassis rail. I've glued the clamp plate (from the kit crossmember) onto the bottom of the blower and drilled out the blower to take a piece of tubing.
The brass rail end is made from tube, with a plug of brass rod and a brass collar soft soldered on to it. I've slotted it to accept the front end of the leaf spring.

Trial assembly. There is a lot of work to do to get the bottom of the nose looking right, and I need to find a way to fix the new chassis rail to the chassis legs. Maybe a pin through the brass end into the plastic will be enough...

great details. I think one of the beauties of large scale is that it "must work". there's no place to hide things done wrong.

    Hello Jo!

I'd, always wanted to see this car done in a large model, and I have collected a lot of photos and articles, . . . But I am not a "car-guy" so much as I am a model-guy.

I've posted a recent-ish image of the super-charger, which I think is the original.

But I don't really know much about super-chargers. The brass bolt out front, and the valve? on top? And the history of the Villiers badge, I think on one car at least, they were removed in dispute?

And of course, this may not represent the condition of the super charger at an earlier date.

Thank you for your postings, on both this and your Alfa build! -Don

I'm not sure of the history of the supercharger either! But I have found evidence that neither brass feature was on the car in 1932 - take a look

    Hi Jo!

Here is the oldest image I have found, small opening for radiator, small carb. bumps, dumb-iron fairing, and no brass bolts / valve. (Probably painted blue?)

Hello Jo! While on a break at work today I was searching the web for any new images of the single-seater. -And I thought I had found something new! the car was at the Concorso d'Eleganza at the Villa d'Este? at lake Como? And there were several pictures, one up close of the front hubs minus brakes!

-Or at least that's what I thought I saw.

Coming home I can't find anything!! And I suspect that what I actually saw was a replica!!! It was supposedly May 26-28 2017.

    Maybe a goose-chase? -Don

Difficult! It looks like a perfect replica of what UU5871 would have been like in 1932, but there are detail differences.
    No fairing over the handbrake
The radiator cap is chromed - on the current car it's painted red, and I doubt that it would have been different in 1932. when Birkin had it painted red, most of got painted. Cars don't go faster because you polish the chrome!
I've yet to see a modern picture with no front brakes - as it's been used as a road car since the "60s, I'd assume it would always have had them.
The bulge in the front of the bonnet side panel is teardrop shaped. at some time it became a D shape with an open back - like my model. I don't know when this happened, but the current car has it.

There are a few replicas around. Here are some of them...

Unless.... whoever bought the real thing has over-restored it back to what it could have been. In which case I'd argue over the lack of fairing, the wrong carbs, and what looks like a black headrest - which I think should be red. There's also a hint of metallic 1/12 Birkin Blower Bentley single seater paint there... and - it's FAR TOO SHINY!

    Hello Jo!

This is another view taken at the same place and time as the other. -And I think it is THE cockpit! Its got traces of the "Blue-bird" blue on the inside walls, that is all that's left of that paint scheme, so it must be pre-Daniels?

In this recent photo, you can see the peeled away tape that used to exist on the steering wheel spokes. -Don
