This very much comes under the heading of future projects, but I believe it can be built from the Airfix kit, with a scratch built 1/12 Birkin Blower Bentley single seater body. I've already found some 3D print files for the body, which even if not accurate, could be used as the basis for a body buck.

      Has anyone attempted it?

Roger, I think that my head was somewhere else when I made the second brake lever. I used the mill to position the holes, 4 with a 1mm cutter and 5 with a 1.5mm cutter. Then I forgot to progressively enlarge them....

    I used a 1.1mm, 1.2mm, 1.3mm drill and didn't have a 1.4mm. luckily the Number drills came to the rescue with a no.54 drill.

I've since found a photo from 1930 of the brake, gearlever and flyscreen. Very useful!

Compared to the 1970 rebuild, the handbrake, gearlever and the gearlever surround are all different... but look about the same as the current rebuild. Note the spring on the handbrake which hasn't been refitted in either refurbishment.

    Here's handbrake no.3 and gearlever no.2

1/12 Birkin Blower Bentley single seater-img_3165-jpg

Not a very good picture, and it doesn't do the brake lever justice - it does actually look better than that!

Don - thanks for the pictures, I'd seen the second one but not the first. The cockpit layout is different to mine, which I took from the 2012 version.

What to do now? I seem to be building a mix of both versions.

The bulkhead is interesting, with the perspex covering the brooklands stickers and the blue paint. One of those stickers is for a 1977 reunion, so it doesn't look like it was like that in 1932. However the top sticker looks like an original entrant badge, and the 1930 blue paint surrounds them. I can think of two possibilities - either the bulkhead was left in blue, or it was painted black, carefully painting around the entrant badge. But which?

My brain needs the evening to mull this over, and it's now wine o'clock....

    Hello Jo,

I found these pictures that I think will illustrate to everybody the problem you face in getting the lever "correct"
I think there is some distortion to this first picture, but it does show a bend that is not visible in other pictures.

Possibly one car with interchangeable levers?

    -Don

(Sorry for these late additions, I have a lot of photos, and on this subject, I'm afraid I have
not kept them organized, -so many!!!)(My apologies!)

It seems that there were many levers. Possibly during restoration, the existing lever was modified/bent/whatever to suit the driver. I have no idea how many cars were build; there must be variations between each vehicle.

    Hello Jo,

Do you have the full frame of the picture that you last posted as a reference? I have seen it, and I do not see the hydraulic dampers on the rear axle?

Yes you're right - it's an early picture of the car with no rear friction dampers. I'll post a short history of what was done when - soon. And there is only one of them!

    Hello Jo,

My last posted image is from an obscure source, and not the same picture previous.

Of note is the amount of lever hidden by the chassis rail fairing,(crf), and the shifter, which also changes over the years, and the difference in the bonnets, from the George Daniel's car, to past and present iterations. -Height of louvers, and whether the hinges are of the exposed variety or are subdural?

Lovely pun. "Subdural" meaning "under the aluminium" Dog Latin at it's best!

Don's pictures, one of which showed the cockpit of the car as it is today, caused some serious thought. Most of the photos I have are of the car pre 2012. The subsequent owner has changed the configuration so that it is a lot more like the car was in the 30s. The view of the cockpit was dissappointing, as I've carefully built it to the 2012 version...

However the aim was always to build the 1932 racer, specifically (I have to have a point in time!) the Easter Brooklands meeting.

So - in the cockpit, the floor should be wood not aluminium, the fuel pressure pump needs a bracket, and the switches need a new mounting plate. More importantly, the bonnet is wrong. Looking carefully, it has the wrong blister to clear the magnetos (I'd made the later D shaped version) and not nearly enough louvres. Happily the louvres are the same size as the tooling I'd already made, just more of them...

To start with, I needed a new blister tool. Here's a comparison of the bonnets in the 30s and 2012...

Jo, I only can see the first 3 pictures. It's me or have others the same problem?

I second that, I can only see three... All the other attachments remained numerical.

The suspense is almost too much to bare. -really quite a dramatic posting.

Unless it is your intention to tease us?

    Nobody likes a tease Jo.

I gave up trying to get all pictures sorted last night - first of all the first three weren't showing, then when I fixed those the rest disappeared. It looks ok in edit, until you post and then they're gone! I'll try again now...

I know the feeling, I have stumbled with posting things too.

And? I have found a folder of pictures that I had mislabeled in my computer, which will further muddy the waters. (except one)
