This very much comes under the heading of future projects, but I believe it can be built from the Airfix kit, with a scratch built 1/12 Birkin Blower Bentley single seater body. I've already found some 3D print files for the body, which even if not accurate, could be used as the basis for a body buck.

      Has anyone attempted it?

Hi Jo, the handwheel is for adjusting the brake tension cable which runs through 3 pulley wheels from the brake peddle to the main brake lever shaft assembly.

Thanks for the drawing and explanation. The mechanism looks very Steampunk!

Hi guys, I'd been going to the Bentley meets at Silverstone each year, collecting as much info and pics as I could for when I build mine
and one year I was lucky enough to meet Stanley Mann, who was kind enough to take the time and explain the mechanism to me, this is one of his Bentley's.
The drawing is a section view from my CAD that I've been putting together, sadly, I've not been lucky enough to find any books with the details I wanted.
Although this isn't the one your building Jo, I think the brackets would be the same.

Hello Made to Ride, would love to see more of your work. Drafting is a skill that most modelers would benefit from. I’m old school pencil, but I can certainly appreciate what your doing

    Apologies Jo

Aha, Vaughan Davis' Old Mother Gun - I remember meeting Vaughan at Stanley Manns when he was building it. I used to work just up the road, and when in need of extreme sanity I'd drop in to the Fruit Farm at lunchtimes...

Is Old Mother Gun on a standard chassis? I always got the impression that it was narrower.

My front damper bracket is just like your drawing except for the rib...

Hello Model A Model, I'll be happy to post what I have whilst helping with questions but I'm not yet ready to start a build blog.
My CAD is only to assist my model building, I will never give up my pencils.

    Hi Jo,
No she is no longer on a standard chassis.
My info on The Old Mother Gun has her starting out on chassis #ST3001 and was the standard 10' 10" wheelbase which would be 27. 9/16" (700mm) wide at the front of chassis
and 35. 7/16" (900) at the rear, with a 55. 7/8" (1420mm) rear wheel track width (distance between the centres of the wheels).

However, this was changed by Robin Jackson during 1936 and the chassis was completely replaced with chassis #RRJ1 of which I have no more info but would assume the wheel track to be the same given the axle dimensions.
If my memory serves, the only difference in front axles was the removal of the jacking lugs in order to reduce weight as they added and extra leaf or 2 in the front from standard.

I must add that yours is a great build Jo, I look forward to the updates.

I've been thinking about how to make the handbrake for a while, a lack of pictures of the inside face and the angled machining required adding to the procrastination...

The centre cut for the machined out portion and the lightening holes were fairly simple

1/12 Birkin Blower Bentley single seater-img_3153-jpg

I had machined a box at the wide end: I skewed the vice on the mill table. To get the angle, I used the two ends of the cut to get the alignment. Moving the work over by the thickness of the rib defined the outer face. I didn't cut right through as it would have weakened the plate. Leaving about 0.3mm was enough to keep the stiffness. I sawed through this once finished.

1/12 Birkin Blower Bentley single seater-img_3155-jpg

The rough machining compared to the (de-chromed) kit part

1/12 Birkin Blower Bentley single seater-img_3157-jpg

Handle added, and a bit of fettling done

1/12 Birkin Blower Bentley single seater-img_3161-jpg

1/12 Birkin Blower Bentley single seater-img_3163-jpg

And after I'd finished I checked the period photos. I have a strong suspicion the the the brake lever was straight in the '30s, not bent... However it will stay as it is for now!

    Thanks Marcus!

After sleeping on it I decided to make a straight version (that's number 3). It will have a nickel plated 1/12 Birkin Blower Bentley single seater handle and a satin black lever - if anyone knows better, let me know before I plate it - please....

Honestly Jo, your brake lever did not please me: the holes should have each a different diameter (if the black lever is an indication); the large hole next to the small one has an exaggerated diameter and then all holes seems to have the same diameter. Let see your new design!
