This very much comes under the heading of future projects, but I believe it can be built from the Airfix kit, with a scratch built 1/12 Birkin Blower Bentley single seater body. I've already found some 3D print files for the body, which even if not accurate, could be used as the basis for a body buck.

      Has anyone attempted it?

Interestingly, the brass bolt below the villiers nameplate is a late addition. I wonder what it's for?

It's hard to believe but that one bolt holds the belly pan and tail section of the body on!

I told you it was going to be hard to believe.

It did not originally have that bolt, and I have forgotten the sequence of owners, but it did have that bolt, when it was made into a green two seater.

Jo. your model is coming along beautifully.
Looking at the pictures on the last post.... Is this for real?
Has the current owner of the Birkin Bentley actually converted this historic racer to a 2 seater and painted it green? Why?
The Hispano Suiza H6C with the Honduras Mahogany bodywork rubbed right back and now over restored so that all the years of patina has been destroyed.
Have also seen pictures of a Type 59 Bugatti now painted in non original black. Why do owners do this to historic cars?

Hello Noel, Don here, (sorry Jo.) I posted the above picture, and it is of the Birkin single seater, before it was restored to it's proper condition. Jo can relate the sequence better than I. -rest assured that this car is RED and seats only one. (as for the black Type 59, I believe that, that is historically correct for that particular car)(not all Bugattis are blue)(not all Bentleys are green)

Back to Jo's question, the hex head in dispute, the oldest images that I can find do not show it, however the "landing" for it does seem to exist in the casting 1/12 Birkin Blower Bentley single seater ? Maybe it provides access, or aides in servicing? the super-charger?

Regarding the history and current status of the car: after WWII it was converted to the green two-seater, but the single seat body was retained and refitted in the early 70s. As the two seater was a road car, the rebuilt single seater kept the additional front brakes and mudguards. It was sold to a German buyer in 2012 who has removed the additions and restored it to its 1932 configuration. Here it is in 2017 at Villa d'Este:

Jo and Don. Thanks for the feedback. Did not realise that the photos showing the Bentley with green bodywork were quite old. It was Russ Turner who put the monoposto body back on the car, and after he died it was bought by Daniels the famous horologist watchmaker and the car resided with him on the Isle of Man. The car was auctioned by Bonhams when he died and bought by its present German owner. It was quarantined for a while after the sale in the UK whilst it was determined if the car was of such historical interest that it should not leave the UK.

A quick update. It's that slow period where I need to make all the bits I've been avoiding...

Kickboard from ally sheet, and much thinner 1/12 Birkin Blower Bentley single seater pedals than the kit version

1/12 Birkin Blower Bentley single seater-img_3035-jpg

The undertray has had masses of milliput added (and taken off) and is closer to the desired shape

1/12 Birkin Blower Bentley single seater-img_3038-jpg

    Chassis framing

1/12 Birkin Blower Bentley single seater-img_3039-jpg

...and the first WWI aircraft style cockpit switch in styrene 1/12 Birkin Blower Bentley single seater and brass. Now I need to make two more

Cockpit side panel, with switches and fuel (?) pressure pump

1/12 Birkin Blower Bentley single seater-img_3046-jpg

Flying buttresses added to the silencer supports

1/12 Birkin Blower Bentley single seater-img_3051-jpg

1/12 Birkin Blower Bentley single seater-img_3053-jpg

I had to reposition them further back to fit the silencer...

1/12 Birkin Blower Bentley single seater-img_3055-jpg

1/12 Birkin Blower Bentley single seater-img_3057-jpg

At the moment I seem to be permanently coated in yellow Milliput dust. I used up some old white milliput on the undertray initially, and gave it another coat of grey/green Milliput. None of the white Milliput hardened properly (as I found when it clogged my coarse files) so I ground it all off and started again...

Fortunately, excellence does not require perfection? Both of your models replicate the qualities of your chosen subjects.

A bit more detail in the cockpit: Gearbox access panel

Panel added, some floor detail, seat brackets

I think I have finally got the undertray shape finished. Here's how I spaced the rivet holes
