Hey everybody!!
It has been quite a while since I have posted anything up here. Working out all the details for the new TDR
427 Roadster is really taking up all my time. In working out some of these details I worked up a process of making custom rubber hoses for your model that worked so well I wanted to share this with you.
Forgive me if I am re-hashing an old technique that any any 10 year old modeler knows. I am fairly new to modeling and may have just missed the 100 tutorial that show this process.
Anyway, I wanted to make a hose that looked like rubber, was easy to shape, and had a close to scale thickness to it.
The thickness was the driving requirement for the process. It would be easy to go down to the auto parts store and find a rubber hose that was close to the correct outside diameter for the scale hose. The problem is the hole in the center is just too small, so the wall thickness would be way too thick to look in scale. So I had to come up with a way to make a thin walled tube that would not kink or colapse.........
Well I think I figured it out!!!!
My background is more rooted in industial design so I tend to draw my basic parts from that area.
I needed to simulate a rubber hose......so I thought O-ring cord stock......that should do it. But then I thought "how do I attach it to the car". A butt joint just would not look right and it would be very weak and come apart easily...........so what to do.......
Well, I came up with the idea of slipping a piece of Heat Shrink Tubing over the O-ring cord stock. Not only did the heat shrink tubing provide the ability to slip the hose over the model car part and form a strong bond.......BUT.......it also allowed me to bend the hose and make it take a permanent cold set!!!!
