I have never cast my own parts before (although that is something that would like to try some time), but when I was on the staff of LSP I knew a number of aftermarket manufacturers and after talking with them I was shocked at the high cost of the rubber molds and their relatively short life. I ran across this video last night where they were making a mold of a large statue to then be laid up in fiberglass, they laid a layer of the rubber down first, after that dried they put a release agent on it and then covered it with a thicker layer of plaster to make the mold rigid. I wondered if that process could work with the small molds used in our hobby so you didn’t have to use as much of the expensive rubber? Or, would this process be too much work for the savings?
