I couldn't remember where the thread was so I'll start another. Here's my generic bomber seat, mocked up with card stock. I used the Lindberg dragster seat for dimensions.

My wife's grandfather flew B-24's in the big one and said that pilots would often sit on 2 (or more) flak jackets in an effort to protect some jewelry that belonged to their family - or words to that effect.

Stevie, your wife's grandfather was sharp.......this is what a 50cal. looks like when it comes up through the floor of a Huey between your feet. That's why we sat on our "chicken" vests.

Grandpa McGurk.....Steppin' Large and Livin' easy.

I had something like that come through the floor of an APC while in the Middle East some years ago. Hit an improvised land mine, luckily it expended most of the force into the engine compartment, killed the driver and took the legs off of the crew commander. We had the cargo doors open and I poped right out of them and landed on my arse behind the vehicle. A bit deaf but otherwise ok. Damn lucky realy.

Here is an image of a WWII period N2S Stearman seat showing details not normally seen. These were somewhat generic seats used in several types of aircraft.
I have other views if needed for reference. The two seats are identical front and rear fabricated with brass stock in 1/15th scale.
