After the Harley Next Project, i've started this new adventure always in 1/8, of course..

This time i've decided to start the work using any kind of kit, i'll try to scratchbuild the entire motorbike. I know, it will be a long trouble..

Till now i've done the first part of the engine, starting from the cylinders and then the cranckcase. The engine is a Knucklehead, the same of last time, but now i'm going to use original plans and measures of the engine, trying to reproduce it as well as I can ..

From few photos and draws i've obtained the profiles of the fins, then printed on paper and glued onto plasticard. So they've been cutted and assembled.
Same work for the case.. profiles printed on paper, then plasticard, so cutted and glued.

OMG, you're building the HD motor from scratch!!! That's amazing! Not to mention I am interested in more info about the plans you have. Can you share more with us?

I am too planning to scrathbuild a HD motor but I was looking into 3D printing it. Although it's too expensive to print it in 50 microns resolution (about 250 EUR).

Thanks,
DanP

Thanks a lot Utzelu!!
I've searched a lot of material before starting this work and maybe the most important document is the blueprint you can find on google..

The main problem was to find the right shape for the fins, but i found some pictures (and a friend helped me a lot about that) from which i draw the single outlines of the fins and of the case..

After all.. 3D printing is for pussies.. workin' with plasticard is better gringrin

HERE ('http://www.bikemenu.com/photos/specs/knuckelhead.jpg') you can find the blueprint I told you 1thumbup1

it's a set I bought on ebay for few euros.. there are a lot of different types of screws for micro-mechanics, watchmaking and optics.

I used 1mm screws, but there are few dimensions, from some tenths, till a couple of mm .

I'm still workin' on .. now i'm almost at 60% with second cylinder-head. As the first one I used 0.5mm plasticard for vertical fins and 5mm tube for valves.

I'm working on the rockers now ( the valve box). I used a 10mm multi-layer plasticard on which I applied the 3 views of the component, and than i cut out the shapes with cutters and files

Very nice work there Disca. You are a craftsman. 1clap1

I like your technique used on the rockers cover. Did you think to cast the engine in resin when you're done with it? I assume you wouldn't want to scratch-build another one for your future projects.

ahhah! U're right!
I've used a kind of circle-maker I used also for mechanical drawing, sth like this: http://www.netmars.net/public/zoom_13621994_IMG_4324.JPG
with this instrument i've masked the external part of the tyre, while I was spraying with flat white the internal one.

Thank utzelu..
Yep, I'm going crazy now scratchbuilding this, and one day i'll use it as master to obtain a little series of resin casted engines.. Someone other asked me if i can sell it, If someone interested, i can cast some models more..

Good idea!
And what kind of paint do you use?

I used a common Tamiya acrylic flat white, sprayed perpendicularly to avoid paint infiltrations under the mask..

Hi Disca92, could you please let me know where did you get the scale plans for this bike?

HI Marudek!
I just found a blueprint of the engine on google (if you look for knucklehead blueprint u'll find it!) and used a lot of detailed photos from which I obtained vectorial draws used as masks for the pieces.

Nice job! It's a pleasure to look at such a scratch gringrinI'd like to build 1/9 Morgan three wheeler (Beattleback) but lack good reference materials. Now I ask around for a good source of blueprints (I need Matchless air cooled engine and all possible details).
