View Full Version : Do we have a medal for Ugly?

Cause if we do I think I'm getting it for this build. Look away now if you're easily offended.
The "vehicle" in question is a Gurgel (pronounced Gur-shel) X-15 pickup. VW-based and made in Brazil. I'm pretty sure the body is fiberglass. I'm using a Tamiya TA-02 chassis, as the components all sit nice and low, and combined with the X-15's stupidly high floor a full interior is possible.

Well...I for one thinks it is sort of cute. But I like VW Things too which Gurgel made something that sort of looked like a Thing.

Perhaps something in a medal based on this old classic...
It kinda looks like an OKA (an aussie build 4WD, do google image search) only uglier lol

Yep.....that goes beyond ugly. It's butt ugly!
Please tell me you're not going to paint it toad green or barf yellow. gringrin

Ugly, perhaps, but with nothing in the picture to really give a sense of scale, it also looks huge, like a mining rig.

Yep, that about describes it. OBH, you've become the site's guru on ugly trucks. I'd paint it Pepto Bismol pink.

I'm thinking of a minty blue.

The 1:1's are pretty far from huge. They use VW running gear. I'm kicking around ideas to make the old VW wide-5 wheels.

Here's the first wheel:

Made from the wheels pictured earlier and a Monster Energy big-can cap. One down, three to go.

Second attempt came out better than the first, using styrene for the center section:

The little aluminum teats don't fit anymore so I'll make/find some styrene centers.

It's actually Hot Magenta, but yeah.
I got a good start on... well I can't really call it a rollcage. Your life would have to suck pretty bad for you to be willing to stake it on this rickety-looking thing.

Can't really call it a ladder rack either unless you want your ladders to fall off.
It does have lots of handholds for hot Brazilian chicks to grab onto, though gringrin
Nortley
11-19-09, 09:38 PM
That rack already looks better than some of the real ones I see on the local roads. Using it as a passenger grab is an authentic enough use too, from what I've seen in other places.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Thought she has a face only a mother could love, this utilitarian vehicle is a true work horse and I for one would love to get ahold of one. Anyone that has ever had a VDub would be tickled to get ahold of this little beast. I am always amazed at your ability to make bodies out of sheet plastic. Not to change the subject and I see you use alot of Tamiya's chassis, I was notified a few weeks ago that the re-pop pf the Sand Scorcher was available again, $500.00 plus ship from Tamiya of America. Looking forward to more from ya!1gramps1

I'd love to put a scale chassis under it, but I'm trying to keep the budget under control. Five bills is a lot, and Scorchers drive like poo anyway.

I discovered a new rust technique that I think you guys are going to like. The problem with painted rust is that it doesn't change the texture like real rust does. Look at my muffler:
http://www.scalemotorcars.com/forum/images/imported/2009/12/9.jpg
The colors are right, but it's still smooth. Now look at this 1:1 brake drum:
http://www.scalemotorcars.com/forum/images/imported/2009/12/26.jpg
See how crusty it is? To get that crusty texture, paint some flat black onto the area you want to rust, and dribble some Microballoons (available in the airplane section at your LHS) in. Once it's dry, continue with the red-brown and orange.
Now look at the brake drum again. It's actually a Big Deuce part.1strange1

Good one OBH. Ive actually got Micro-balloons if anyone needs them. Ill be sure to add it into the catalog. Not all LHS carry it.

Hey OBH, that's the best rust treatment I've seen yet. It's better than the technique gluing down small bits of rusted steel wool. I like the texture of what you have much better than the strands of the steel wool.
