Still trying to decide where this build will go, it hasn't started talking to me yet he1he

I figured the best way to begin was by chopping up a VW, right?

This one's been sitting around approximately forever with the ESC and receiver out of it. Old Kyosho body on a Wild Ceptor I bought for the tires, back when that was the only way to get Sand Blasters. 20 bucks for a brand-new kit ain't a bad deal :D The Ceptor (*** does that word even mean?) has no suspension, so the floor is nice and flat and I can build the wheel wells nice and tight. Other than that it's pretty much worthless.

So I got this far:

... and ran out of glue. The front end needs a bit of tweaking, either it needs to be longer (but I think it's plenty long enough) or the angle needs to be changed, to get the front panel slimmed down to headlight size. That will come in time.

The Phoenix never came as an assembled vehicle or even a kit; just a set of plans out of a 1978 issue of Popular Science, so no two are alike. I don't know how many are out there.

For paint, disco stripes seem to be called for gringrin Not sure if I'll build it with a fold-out tent, or regular van style. Time's gonna tell. But first I need more glue.

Some progress:

Mission statement :D

Side door (and maybe the back one) will get a gullwing hinge.

More styrene slingin':

Side door...

... with gullwing hinge

Back panel, prepped for Pinto wagon taillights

Paneling :D

Got all the seams and corners done. Don't know why this one (all flat panels and sharp edges) needed so much filler when the Firebird (all curves) didn't hardly need any, but there you are. Could see paint or at least primer today.

Interior panels all closed up and boxed in

Rear door with funky window

Gullwing, of course. I'd be real surprised if the 1:1 didn't use trunk hinges for the gullwing doors.

Hinges aren't that hard, just brass and aluminum tube. I would have used brass for all parts, but the LHS hasn't re-stocked since my last raid.

Some color:

Sorry it's a little fuzzy, 1/2 second exposure so you can see the real color.

I just love these RC builds but when are we going to see a Dynamic Manta or vintage on-road car.

Back in the early 80's I lived just a few miles for all the great RC companies like Associate, Novak, Mip and Cox. I wish I still had them all. Especially my old 1/8 Dynamics.

Just an FYI my Tamiya Club profile (http://tamiyaclub.com/showroom.asp?id=18535).

I sold off most of my onroad stuff when I quit racing (got sick of all the BS) so there's not much to pick from there. I do have the front half of an RC12L3 that I tried unsuccessfully to give away he1he

I have 10 times more fun running the trails with my buds than I ever had racing. Although I'm tempted to bring the Trail Bird out to the local carpet track for the Vintage Trans-Am night.

I'm a little disappointed in the lack of angel hair and a wish nik on the dash. he1he

I built this Weber carb maybe 10 years ago, finally found a use for it he1he

You do amazing work and I've learned a lot just from your post. I hear ya about the racing BS but wanted you to know that exist even at the higher levels so it's just part of what it takes to race anything. That same junk was around when my Dad raced in the early 50s and was there when I raced in the 70s and 80s. Keep up the great stuff you do.

Ain't that the truth. When I raced 1:1's in the early 90's I decided to keep it low budget, fun and with a sense of humor. Taking it seriously was NOT part of the program. Hence:

... the E-Lemon-Ator he1he I actually got this heapster into a magazine. Not bad for $1200.

That looks like it was fun, as it should be. gringrin

Got a little more done up front:

Carpet, door panels, start of the dash. This fabric is freaking hideous, even by 1978 standards he1he

03-16-11, 06:45 PM
Are you related to Propeller. Beautiful work, Sir. I actually had furniture like that, back in the day.

03-17-11, 02:44 AM
With a honker like that on the E-Lemon-Ator,
ya should have put a big moushtash on it... he1he

Old Busted Hotness

No mustache, but it did have a big flaming lemon on the scoop. It's not easy finding a scoop small enough to fit a Yugo, believe me.

Not much progress, had a busy week.

Dash is in, needs a little carpet patch on the edge.

Taillights started

Got the headlights done. I think the trim ring is from a '76-78 Eldorado, but I guess it doesn't make a hell of a lot of difference he1he

Steering column is a TXT-1 chassis brace, wheel is another custom job.

Dolly took some time from her busy schedule to pose with the Turbo T/A:

Whew, that was exhausting. Better go lie down.

Have some wine while you're relaxing.

Want some music while you relax? I'll turn up my new Thrusters

I was going to make a knob joke, but that's just too easy, even for me.

Did you actually make the girl? if so, how and out of what. You really are amazing at this stuff. Thanks for sharing.

I can't take credit for Dolly, I found her on eBay. Look under 1/8 figures, anime. Among the various ninjas, dragons and freaks you'll find quite a few lovelies cast in resin. The face is a little off, huge eyes and a small nose, but you don't look at her face that much anyway he1he

Got the roof on. Thought about making it a tilt-up Westfalia style, but eff it.

Gotta have mirrors on the ceiling :D

Wow, has it really been six weeks since I updated this thread?

The van is finished (only a few detail parts added) but I can't get it outside for pics. It's been raining that long. Maybe I should have built a boat instead.

05-18-11, 11:44 PM
Ya know Stu, I have to say that this aint really my stien of suds, the '70s are over and there is darn good reason for that.

The funny thing is, I keep coming back and looking again, and again. I was a teenager for most of the '70s and back then I would have given up two of my last three c*****s for a van like this!

Damn nice build Busted, I love the creativity!

PS. The Backseat Bimbo is priceless!
