Due to some unexpected personal issues I've been unable to participate in this contest. But, as the author of the Engine Building Contest, I want to commend each entrant. Your work is incredible and as a member of this site, I'm proud to be associated with all of you.

The contest is still open for central, mountain and pacific time zones. I don't think we have any entries from Hawaii so at this writing, depending on your individual time zone, the entry deadline goes to 1:00PM pacific time or 4:00 eastern time. That's when I'll start the judging. That alone will take me several hours to finish because of such fantastic entries we've gotten. Hopefully, I'll be able to post the winners on 18 Aug 08. Once that is done, then addresses will be requested and the prizes will be sent out. Good luck all.

O.K. then. All entries are in and the judging has started. I have to say to all contestants that each and every entry is well done and a contest winner in it's own right. That's what's going to make this very difficult to pick winners. Remember that if you don't win, it doesn't mean you did a lousy job or your work is substandard. With some of the entries I've seen here today, I doubt I can win in a category.

    Are you judging completed work,
and work in progress on the same basis?

That's a very good question. I'm pretty much judging finished and non finished work the same depending on the stage of completion. If the model is at least 80% complete, it might make the difference in a close call. If an incomplete engine more than 80% complete is better than a completed engine with regards to my criteria which will explained along with the announcement of winners, then the incomplete engine will be the winner. The reason I went with 80% complete is because there wouldn't be enough details to tell how well the builder handled his subject. There would be too much left to the imagination. If some wiring, the headers or the tranny is left off, I still consider that complete since 1:1 engines are displayed that way. If an all metal engine is left unpainted, I that's o.k. too since a lot of engines are displayed that way as well.

    Hello? Jeff??
I got up at 4:30am just to see who won!

Just kidding. Getting older makes me wake up this early. Phooey!

I do not envy Jeff for having to judge these amazing model engines and wish him the best of courage. The work displayd here is not intimidating, but inspiring to a modeler like me. I know I can make one hose clamp, or an intake manifold bolt,.. etc. But the key thing with these esteemed builders is that they do all of these tasks over and over again to complete the job. We all have the ability, just maybe not the patience. I am learning how to discipline myself and the work I see from the talent here in these forums drives me to try and stand next to you all.

Thank you all for the fine work displayed here!

Now, hurry up Jeff, I'm jonesin' to find out which model you've picked.

    Jus' kidding!
    Matt

It's going to be a tough call for sure....great work guys. Perhaps we should make this a yearly event?
