First Annual SMC Engine Building Show

SHOW DATE IS NOVEMBER 18-20th.

RULES
** Any registered Scale Motorcars member or staff can enter.
** Engines must be 1/16th scale or larger car, truck, motorcycle, plane or military.
** Please post your intent to participate ASAP.
** Completed or in progress engines can be submitted at any time prior to the "Show".
** Enter as many engines and photos as you wish.

CATAGORIES

BOX STOCK
** Must be a commercially available 1/12th scale or larger plastic, resin or RP engine kit or engine from a model kit. One piece molded engine/trans kits and engine kits that include a transmission are allowed.
** The ONLY modifications allowed are sanding /filling of seams, paint, spark plug wires, plumbing and weathering . RP engines are allowed basic smoothing as long as the original design of the engine is not altered. Transmission detailing, such as fittings, shifter etc are NOT allowed.

OPEN
** Must be a commercially available 1/12th or larger plastic, resin or RP engine kit or engine from a model kit. One piece molded engine/trans kits are allowed and engine kits that include a transmission are allowed.
** There is no limit to modifications. Scratchbuilt parts, cut outs to view internals and the addition of a detailed transmission is allowed.

SCRATCHBUILT
** No limits but must be 1/16th or larger.

THIS IS A SHOW, NOT A CONTEST
Each participant will recieve a form of recognition for entering the show. That item will be announced at a later date.

The majority of you wanted a show rather than a competition and the reasons were many. In particular, some of you felt that by removing the competetive nature of the event, that hopefully some of our members who don't normally participate would not feel intimidated and would enter. I also feel that way so thats why the event is a "Show".

The "Open" catagory created a lot of mail. I've spoken to some of our more prolific builders and am assured that some of them will be participating.

As I mentioned previously, everyone will recieve a form of recognition that can be displayed in your hobby room. More on that later.

Some of you asked if your entry had to be finished before being posted. The answer is "no", but it must be finished for the Show weekend. Feel free to post your build as it happens and to share your tips and tricks with the rest of us. Or, if you want to keep it under wraps until showtime, thats OK. Also, any engine entered in this event is elegible to be part of a model entered in the "Strut Your Stuff Show".

To those of you who have already indicated an interest in this event, please post your intent in this, the official thread. To the rest of you, lets hear from you too.

Finally, thanks to all of you that posted comments and suggestions on site and that contacted me privatly. Thanks also to Andy, Jeff and the others who offered prize donations. I hope you will offer those same donations by posting them on site for the other show.

In the OPEN CLASS, this is the TDR Hemi 426

rick, sounds pretty much like a fun time. i'm guessing open or scratchbuilt for the engines i build. here's my latest. it's a blown BAE hemi. PSI screw blower and a B&J big boy 3 spd. trans.




and one of my favorites the donovan 417 totally scratch built .





i'm thinking of starting on a new project......one of the newer 5.3 bore center nitrous pro mod motors. how about 900+ cubic inches? yeeeeeeeh hah!

Also in the OPEN CLASS, this is the TDR Offenhauser engine. I think it was the first TDR engine I had the chance to build - BEFORE they came out with the outstanding multi-media version.

Guess I better leave room for somebody else but it is so easy to flip through your gallery and pop in pictures I hate to stop. Anyway - again in the OPEN CLASS - the latest TDR engine, the Ford 427.

Rick, I know it took a lot of effort on your part to get this show organized and on track....there was a bit of confusion at the beginning but it just goes to show that SMC really is about it's members.
Whether new to large scale modeling and the forum or having been here since the beginning of the site.....makes no difference. Scale Motorcars exists for it's members.

Your original intent was to give the members that may have been reluctant to post because they felt somewhat intimidated by the incredible builds they've seen on past pages of the forum.

You've also said that you were going to do a couple of entries yourself........one of them being box stock .
Well my friend, kudos on you.

I've talked to the gang in the back room of TDR ....they try to keep me out of the front lobby, something about I need to clean up my act..... LOL.

Now, before this post gets too long....I have a proposal for you.
TDR has done this in past with Syd (Roadster build), HFC has been involved in the past as well.
Occasionally TDR selects a member of the site and sends them one of our products at no charge with the stipulation that the build be posted (in progress) on SMC and MCM.

From what I've seen you post in the past your tastes tend to be a little more "modern" than mine or MF's.
So what we've decided to do is to send you at "no charge" our TDR 6.1 Litre SRT Hemi to build "BOX STOCK" for this event.

As I mentioned the only stipulations are that you build it following the rules you've outlined and post it here and the other site that we frequent. It's not a prize or a giveaway....it's just TDR 's way of giving a little back to our customers and rewarding you for your support and efforts. It would probably look right at home under that MF Willys roadster you've had kicking around. Below is a picture of the beast......

how about 737" of outlaw'ish pleasure? split dominators, nitrous fed,11.9" deck, 4.84"bore space, dry sump BBC w/ olds prostock heads backed up w/ a bruno /lenco setup? all scratch built .







or an all aluminum blown hemi. scratch built ?





here's a blown hemi with a TDR block and TDR 16-71 supercharger. the rest is scratchbuilt.

Don, for the first time since I've known you, you've left me speechless. All I can say is YES!! YES!! YES!!!!!!

Thanks to the TDR partnership for giving me this opportunity. I really appreciate it and can't wait to get started.

Wow, I'm glad this is a show !! The competition is really STIFF with the entries just posted. First rate, guys, all the way.

I'll be entering a few entries myself.

First, I'll put in my Allison engine into the open class and I'll add weathering .

Then I'll try to build something from scratch, maybe in 1/6 scale. I don't want to let that out into the open yet. I want to consult my research to make sure I don't bite off more than I can chew.
I've also got some pics of the TDR Hemi I built but that one isn't in hand anymore.

Here's my 1:8 Alfa 8C2300 with Magneto Start. I started with a Model Motorcars engine block and transmission housing and then did everything else from scratch. Highlights include a hand-machined aluminum oil pan, scratch-build brass exhaust and a high-capacity side-feed water pump. I'll post some "beauty" shots later. I'm combining parts from a R/M Plymouth Drag engine & Testors street 426 (metal kits) along with a little scratch building.

Blown, 2-4 barrels & giggle gas, drag race oil pan with external oil lines.
